If I am majoring in PNP do I need to take the diagnostic exam online?

If you’re planning on taking gen Chem at all, then yes, you need to take it.

And because this question often comes up as well: no, it’s not for placement; you can’t place out of gen chem (unless you’re an engineer). All the diagnostic exam is for is to recommend putting you in an extended recitation if you score poorly.

Thanks Ryan

No problem, I’m here to help!

If you do poorly on the exam, can you not take Chem 111+112? What happens then? I am only worried because I recently realized that I don’t remember very much of chem from last year, even though I got a 5 on the AP.

No. As RyanMK said, the diagnostic exam’s only purpose is to determine if you need to be in an additional recitation. You have to remember that Chem 111 and 112 are intro-level classes, so it would be absurd if you had to place into them.

Since they’re intro-level classes, you’ll learn all the basics. Especially during the first semester, which is a class on quantum mechanics and hence is mostly things that you’ve never seen before. Second semester is more like high school chemistry and things will still move quickly, but you’ll be fine if you got a 5 on AP chemistry.
