Hey guys so just as the title said, I'm looking for a general chemistry online class during the summer (or actually, next Fall is OK too). My college offers all on-campus class and as far as I'm concerned, they all time-conflicted with my math courses, which is more important for me as a math major. I've searched a lot of school catalogs and so far I find one college do this and it's Coastline Community College. However, it has a lab corequisite. I'm from the Bay Area (San Franc) so there is no way I could fly 6+ hours there to take the lab... So if you guys know any general chemistry 1A class that offered online during the summer and either not require lab or in the Bay area please let me know. Very appreciated and thank you.

Don’t you need the lab though? Usually schools require you to take both lec+lab for Chem.

Do you need it to fulfill a prereq? Or just to satisfy IGETC? If it’s just for IGETC and you’ve already completed your other science course with a lab, then College of Marin offers an online chem class (Chem 105) that satisfies IGETC reqs and is aimed at non-science majors who just need to complete that requirement. It’s also being offered this summer: [College of Marin, Distance Learning Web Based Courses](College of Marin: Page Not Found)

I’m a math major too and took it (without lab) to finish IGETC. The only on campus requirement is the final if I remember correctly, and if your from SF, then Kentfield is right over the Golden Gate :)

Thanks for the input guys but I actually need a general chem as a major prereg. As for IGETC, I will have finished it by next Fall so this chemistry class is just strengthening my UCLA application as a math major.

To be perfectly honest, even if you could take it at Coastline, I wouldn’t. I personally think genchem is something that is better learned in the classroom setting since it is essentially a brand new way of thinking that is easier to comprehend that way… whereas many liberal arts classes are things you can somewhat learn on your own as long as you are dedicated to the online program. Also, there are no transferable genchem classes that had an online lab that I have ever heard of, which is what you would need for your major.

On the other hand, I’ve taken all 3 of my math classes (Calc 1-3) online due to schedule constraints and haven’t had a problem with transferring them. In fact, I liked the online format way better than in class math because I could work ahead and found it much more structured though it definitely isn’t for everyone. Is there any way you could take genchem at your school in the fall and take your math class online instead? I’m not sure if you already have a full fall schedule but you may still be able to find math online over the summer instead.

I know it seems like taking it in class might be better since it is your major, but as long as you work hard and make sure you know the material, there is really no difference between that versus online since math is a pretty solo subject. I can also promise you that the UCs don’t care whether any of your classes are online as long as they’re articulated via assist.org.

Thank you kmt. I will try to look for another school near my home that offers Gen Chem on-campus then. Hopefully it will be at night so I can take it. By the way, before closing this thread, would you mind telling me where you take the entire Calc series online? If the Calc 3 online class’s teacher is better than mine, I would definitely take it online and save the time slot for Gen Chem I. Thanks

I just finished taking Calc 3 at Coastline. You would have to get the midterm and final proctored somewhere but my teacher was pretty nice. Personally, I thought it was really easy to get an A but I’ve always been good with math. Her name was Jessica Kuang and she just started teaching there this semester but she mentioned she has her PhD from UCD.

The class uses CourseCompass/Pearson/MyMathLab (~$60 for access and it includes an online version of the textbook)… pretty minimal required homework with unlimited chances and biweekly due dates but there are tons of problems available if you want to do extra (12% of your grade). Also, there are step by step guides to solve ALL the problems on the whole site and only the numbers change in the problems if you restart them. Uhmmm 7 multiple choice quizzes that are basically taken from the homework that you can take 3 times each (24%), she gives you a practice midterm & final (more hw at your leisure) that are almost the same questions as the midterm & final (30% and 30%).

But like I said earlier, if you’re a math major, make sure you put in the work for a class like this because it’s very easy to do minimal work and still get an A but you have to make sure you’re still getting something out of the class.

Oh and the class barely fills up so if you choose to take it, you should have no problem registering.

Thanks kme, really appreciate it. I will consider this option. It’s unbelievable that even 2nd/3rd semester of Calc can be offered online…
