General Ed classes?

I heard that Rice doesn't make freshman take general ed classes, but instead, we choose our courses based on our majors/interests. I was wondering, is this true? Are there any required classes we must take, or do we really get to choose to take whatever we want?

There are no required courses. Your graduation requirements look something like this: major reqs, LPAPs (2 zero credit gym classes), and distribution courses. So as an engineer, I need 12 credits of humanities and 12 credits of social sciences to graduate. If you’re a humanities major, you’ll need 12 of social sciences and 12 of natural sciences/math/engineering. That’s the closest you get to gen ed. But you can choose your distribution courses (and lots of classes count for distribution credit). You can go to courses.rice.edu for specific course info. The website will let you search by distribution.

Shorter version of adamb529’s comment (which was pretty concise and well-put anyway, good job!):

No required classes unless your major calls for it

Instead you need 12 credit hours in three different distributions, although a wide variety of classes exist within each distribution so you should find classes you like for each.

ok thanks guys :)

what are the distributions?

also, another question. i heard that it was really easy to double (or even triple) major at Rice. do you guys have any personal experiences with this?

D1 - humanities (huma, history etc.)
D2 - social sciences (psyc, soci etc.)
D3 - sciences (physics, chem etc.)

As for x-majoring, it depends on your major; some are larger than others. For example, English may require 40 hours and math may require 50 hours. You need 120 to graduate with 1 major and 150 for a dual degree, so double majoring will be very possible. Some majors like chemE, EE, mechE etc. are larger (130+ hours) with 90 of those being required, making it more challenging to double major.

It is entirely dependent on the requirements of your major. What do you have in mind?

i was thinking about majoring in stats and one of either med/bio/comp sci/business.

will Rice tell us all about how to choose classes/credits and graduation and majoring requirements? lol because i am super confused…
i was actually super confused about even credits in hs until like junior year haha

There is no undergrad business or medicine major

You should be able to double major with that selection

You will get to meet with an academic adviser during O-Week. O-week advisers (upperclassmen) will help you as well.

oh right…haha yeah i knew that, i was just absent-mindedly typing the things that i was interested in, rather than actual majors offered at Rice.

thank you for your replies!
i can’t wait until august! this is so exciting! haha

On a side note on double majors, I’m interested in some form of math and biology, does anyone know how I can figure out how many credit hours are specified for each? I think I saw 65 for Bio, but no clue for math, and then with the overlap, does anyone know how many total this is?

Everything you need to know academically will come during O-Week.

runallday - Look for double major requirements at math.rice.edu and [2011-12 Undergraduate Degree Requirements : Rice University Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology](<a href=“Department of BioSciences | Wiess School of Natural Sciences | Rice University”>Department of BioSciences | Wiess School of Natural Sciences | Rice University)

Many classes such as the intro sciences will overlap. The Bio major requires Math 101, 201 and 211, I believe and these will either be covered by your AP or math degree.
