As a practical matter, are general elective credits of any use? Or do most people graduate from MIT with more general elective credits than they need? To put it another way, is there any point in taking AP exams as a senior if they will only lead to general elective credits?

I had enough credits to graduate taking 4 classes every semester. I got 9 general elective credits and I passed out of 18.01. I think it could come up big. Just make sure you plan out your schedule well so you don't have to take 6 classes in your final semester because you forgot about an institute requirement.

What are general elective credits (and unrestricted elective units...?)? I have the same question as texas137...I've already taken about 15 APs and figure more won't help me, but want to make sure. I emailed the admissions@mit.edu about two weeks ago about it, but no one responded.
