I'm starting at Drexel in a couple weeks, and I was wondering what software I should have installed on my laptop before I get there. Or should I just wait?

Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

yeah
microsoft office

Well I’m no engineering student but I’d imagine that it would be better to just wait to classes start & see what software would be required. Just like with books, you wouldn’t want to purchase software & then end up never using it in class. If you must know which software is required, just e-mail your professors & ask them yourself. Other than that, Good Luck.

B/c you are an engineering student OP, you have access to your schools’ Dreamspark Premium program, where you can get free Microsoft Software. What you can get is Windows 7 and 8 Pro, Visual Studio 2010/12, Windows Server, things like that, but not MS Office (but you can get it for free by installing the Office 2013 Preview which will expire in June 2013). Your school should have a way for you to sign up.

Of course, do find out what software you need, but the point is you won’t have to spend a lot of money to get it.

Ditto. Other than Microsoft Office, wait until you get there. Load programs as you need them (there may be an old, updated, or specially modified, version they use). Many required programs are available for free (or substantially cheaper) through the school.

The University’s website will probably tell you what is required for your major, and options to obtain the software. Don’t spend much money on software until you fully investigate it.

At my son’s college, they offer very cheap full Professional versions of Windows operating systems and MS Office University (which is a full professional version of the Office Suite) - but you can’t buy them until you receive your University ID.
