General Engineering

I applied to the Cal Poly as a general engineering major, because it was the easiest type of engineering to get into and because it was still in the CENG I knew that it would be easier to transfer to a major that I would enjoy more such as mechanical or aerospace. My question is assuming I get accepted, is it possible to take the intro ME or AE classes my first quarter so that transfering into those majors would be easier later on, or would I have to take the GENE classes the first quarter or two.

Your first quarter you are blocked. Your schedule, both classes and time slots will be chosen for you. After that the first few quarters are pretty similar to ME, but you can emulate the ME curriculum if you prefer.

Well I knew that the first quarter was blocked for you but also that the GENE major has 2 paths. One with classes decided already, and one where you “create your own degree” and I was more wondering if that create your own path would allow me to take the first few ME classes my first quarter or two.

The two paths don’t diverge until well not the third year.

Just take the classes you’re blocked into and you’ll be fine. There are hoops you need to jump through to switch and you can’t even start the process until you’ve completed one quarter. They do however expect many GENG majors to switch and lower the GPA barrier to get into ME and CS.

Below is what you need to know.
