General Engineering..

Is General Engineering is a decent engineering major? That's my major at Cal Poly, and I want to know if there are good jobs for a person with general engineering major..what kind of jobs would there be? (Btw, there is a bioengineering concentration for Gen. Engr)

Here is the link to Cal Poly Gen. Engr description (scroll down).

any reponses?

did i say something wrong?....

It is kinda of general and U of I is thinking of renaming it due to the confusion. I just don't think you asked a specific enough question to answer. Also Gen Eng is fairly new and very broad so it isn't as easy to pinpoint success with. I wouldn't know which is the best concentration but I know they can range from heavy science to heavily business. It is almost Business Engineering. I have a lot of friends in it and am still not quite certain what it is.

IlliniJBravoEcho - so would you agree then that general engineering at UIUC is not like that off Harvey Mudd, offering a broad perspective on all engineering?

You stated that it is almost Business Engineering. Do any of your friends in GE get jobs at good IB or consulting firms?

Some General Engineering programs, including the one at Cal Poly, lack ABET accreditation (in fact, General Engineering may be the only non-ABET engineering program at Cal Poly). This could be a limitation if you wanted to pursue graduate school or professional licensure in the future. Other General Engineering programs, like at Harvey Mudd, Caltech, or UIUC, do have ABET accreditation.
