General FinAid question for OOS

So I was thinking of applying to University of Iowa & University of Oregon as a transfer. I know that as a OOS student, I wont get alot of of aid. I am Hispanic , & a first generation student. My parents made around $50,000 last year, not including recent cuts, with 6 people that are dependent on my parents.

Now, would this increase my financial aid package in colleges that have a low percentage of Hispanic students ( like 2% - 4%)? I'm just curious.

Unless you are 300pds and run the 100 in less than 15, don’t expect to get money out of Iowa. They are the least generous school in the state. I know from a LOT of experience with them.

You need more schools on your list. Mix them up: publics, privates, matches, stretches, etc. 6-10 would be good. A transfer should use the same principles for college apps as a freshman.

There are very few Public Us that will give financial aid to an OOS student. Since Public Us are supported by state funds most FA is reserved for in-state students. As Scottaa said, look at some privates as well (and look in-state).

^^^

Federal FA doesn’t really care what your nationality is; FA is typically based on identified NEED, regardless of color. And, since you aren’t a resident of either state, you wouldn’t qualify for any state aid.

Most OOS publics cost about $32-45k per year for Cost of Attendance.

There might be some scholarships offered for certain minorities, but likely they are for incoming freshmen, not transfer students. You’d have to check each website. Transfer students have the least opportunities for scholarships.

I hope that you are applying to some of your in-state publics. Since you are a transfer student, that will likely be your most reasonably priced option. I don’t think privates are that generous to transfer students UNLESS they can meet 100% of need with little to no loans (like top elites).

Which in-state publics are you applying to? At least by going to a state school, you’d get the cheapest tuition, federal aid, any state aid, and possibly some scholarship money.

Applying to majority of UCs, no CSU… & various private colleges around CA.

So I would basically get zero to minimum in aid for OOS? Great :frowning:
I heard colleges like UNC-CH are actually pretty generous for FinAid even as OOS… are there any other colleges that are similar to this?

UVa is supposed to be good with FA for OOS students.

I don’t know about UNC-CH. I would email both schools FA offices and tell them your EFC and ask what you can expect in FA. Ask if they will likely award gov’t grants, institutional grants, student loans, or a combo.

There’s no point in applying to various schools if there’s going to be huge gaps in aid and/or huge student loans.

BTW…are you award that oftentimes financial aid is student loans? How much total are you willing to borrow for the two years you have left for undergrad? How much will your parents co-sign for? (you can only sign for small amounts)

Have you taken out any loans so far?

What privates in Calif are you applying to?

What is your current GPA? There are some Calif privates that are better with aid and scholarships for transfers.

While it’s not going to help with FA, since you’re from CA, have you looked at any WUE schools?:

[WICHE - Student Exchange Programs](http://wue.wiche.edu/)

If you are accepted at a school where CA has an agreement (UOregon does not), your tuition will be 1.5x the in-state rate, rather than the regular OOS amount.

To be more specific, I’m applying to ucsd, ucsb, chapman, pepperdine, & asu.

My gpa is currently around. 3.6 I have no loans whatsoever, & I am aware that loans are also a big form of FinAid…

I will take your advice and contact some of the OOS colleges, but is my EFC the same one for my CC, or should I re-calculate it to match the college?

My top school of choice is UCSD, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to give OOS a chance, now I’m debating if it’s even worth applying if it’s going to leave me with huge debt. After all, I’d rather be more in debt for Grad school than as an undergraduate…

Your EFC will stay the same whatever school you attend. Does not mean that is all you will pay though. The EFC is just a # used to calculate eligibility for federal aid and sometimes institutional aid (if a school has any institutional aid). Most federal aid will be the same whether you attend a school that costs $13,000 or a school that costs $35,000. For instance the maximum Pell for a student with a 0 EFC is $5350 at the $13,000 school and also $5350 at the $35k school. The maximum 3rd year Stafford loan is $7500 whether your school costs $12k or costs $35k.

Most State schools cannot meet full need for OOS students with low EFCs. They generally can’t even meet full need for Instate students with low EFCs.

I don’t think ca has exchange agreements with any states. You will get your best aid from a uc since your family income is low. You should get free tuition plus. No other state is going to match or beat that.

I just took about a quick look and found these for the first 3 colleges that I thought of (from different states), all have agreements with CA, so I’d assume that more WUE schools do as well:

[Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)](<a href=“404 - University of Idaho”>Admissions | University of Idaho)

I’m not saying that they’ll end up less than a CA school, but they might be an option for going OOS for the OP.

^^^

Good to know.

However, I doubt any of them will be able to beat the FA that UCSB or UCSD will be able to give him since his family’s income is less $50k. Can a student use their Cal grant out of state?

I know that the UC’s will give him free tuition (aka fees) since his family’s income is low. What else would he get from a UC? In addition to free tuition, would he get fed grants, state grants, and anything else toward room, board and books?

So, can students from those WUE states go to any UC for 150% of in-state rate?

I’m actually a she
& WHOAH! I can get free tuition at UC? Why have I never heard of this? I will definitely look into this more!
and thank you for those links entomom! I was already applying to ASU and was considering Colorado (not anymore).

You have no idea how much you have helped me here! Thank you :)

A girl!! :)

I believe that UC’s will give free tuition next year to students whose families make less than $70k in the form of grants and such.

From ABC news… [UC regents approve 32 percent student fee increase - 11/19/09 - San Francisco News - abc7news.com](http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/education&id=7128122)

Low income is considered families making $70,000 or less and tuition is free for them.

I doubt that ASU is going to be able to beat that.

Something people don’t realize about schools in Iowa is that even for OOS students, tuition is low. I’m sure the OP checked already, but University of Iowa is only $11K OOS for tuition and fees. Maryland is $8K+ for in-state.

UVa, mentioned above is $29K for OOS. The state universities range widely for costs.

MD Mom, according to collegeboard.com, Iowa is $22,198 for OOS.

& mom2collegekids, thanks for telling me about the free tuition! Thats great, I guess I’ll just have to settle to OOS for grad school.

I think that figure ($22K+)includes room and board. My quote was for tuition and fees only for the schools I listed; you can add about $10K to any of them for room and board. I looked at Iowa’s Web site.

MD Mom…where on UIowa’s website are you seeing those figures for OOS tuition/fees?

I don’t think there is a COA for an OOS public flagship for under $25k. I think the lowest (by far) is UMinn.

OOS COA for UIowa is: $34,812

Tuition/fees for OOS at UIowa is: $22,198
