I am a freshman at Creighton (with Sophomore standing), though I will be withdrawing from the University Spring Semester to transfer elsewhere.

My Senior year of High School, I left with:
A 4.7 GPA
An 1880 on the SAT
And like you, I am a Catholic, so I thought the school might be a little more strict (this isn’t true, however)

Like you, I am also out of state, and Creighton gave me a VERY good financial aid package. Do not doubt their generosity (I was also given a job, and I made a decent amount whilst there–not as much as I could have made in my home state, but a good, solid amount to get my basic necessities).

Creighton University is a good school. The professors I had (although some of Creighton’s faculty can be quite rude) were fantastic and dedicated to helping me out, and they all knew my name by the end of the semester. I had to be extremely careful whilst choosing classes, because your success at Creighton did not only depend on how hard you tried, but by the quality of the professor (some of them are really hit and miss). I enjoyed the schooling aspect, though I found the classes to be only SLIGHTLY harder than high school AP classes.

Socially, I suffered at Creighton. I’m not a huge drinker, so it was difficult for me to find a niche to fit in. In the dorm I stayed in, parties were weekly occurrences (my roommate was a heavy drinker) and often resulted in the destruction of furniture/poor sleep. Many students were kind to me (most of them were upperclassmen in dorms such as Swanson and McGloin) and the midwesterners were LOVELY. The people from Omaha/Council Bluffs were the sweetest people you’d ever meet. I loved sitting down and talking to them

Creighton claims to have heavy control over alcohol on campus, but this is not so. Dorms have the occasional, infrequent bag check that students can easily fool (some simply transfer the alcohol into soda containers or water bottles, which the desk attendants do not check) and are not thoroughly executed. Many students go off-campus to UNO or Old Market (where there are bars a-plenty) to party and get their hands on alcohol. I will not lie and tell you that alcohol is NOT pervasive on campus, because it’s very much there and part of Creighton culture. But it’s easy to avoid, if you leave your dorm to go to the library or spend time in the upperclassmen dorms.

If you are CAUGHT intoxicated by public safety, however, you will receive an overnight stay in Creighton Medical sobering up, then receive whatever punishment Father Lannon sees fit to instill you with. The fine can range from 500 or more dollars, along with a phone call home to your parents informing them of your misdemeanor.

Most of the students at Creighton are pre-med or pre-pharm, though a lot of students also attend COBA (College of Business Administration). There are also little factions of those with other majors (I myself was a History major whilst there), though other programs are not as strong.

Creighton may have a Catholic label stuck onto it, but there are over a dozen religions represented on campus (one of the halls even houses a small mosque). The Catholicism is not overly stressed (besides the occasional prayer and the presence of crosses in every classroom).

The city of Omaha is small and quaint. From Council Bluffs, Omaha appears as a sudden stacking of skyscrapers against a rural plane. Creighton is within walking distance of the Old Market, an area full of restaurants that serve amazing food. It’s fun to visit a few times, but it can get old pretty quick. If you don’t have a car, getting around Omaha will be pretty difficult. The zoo is amazing (but again… you can only visit it so many times) and so are the local malls. It’s a good place to stay if you’re content with that sort of setting, but for others (myself included, since I’m from California), it gets boring pretty quickly.

I commend Creighton’s activities, service organizations, tutoring, and counseling. If you have problems, they WILL hear you out and help you to the best of their power.

Creighton is an amazing school, but it just wasn’t the right fit for me. Think carefully before you decide to go here… I would recommend you study the school and visit it.
