General MBA questions

Hey all,

I am currently a sophomore that is planning to major in philosophy. I know that MBA programs do not care what type of degree you have as long as you have devoted your studies to something you are passionate about. I do, however, know they look at work experience.

My family owns a plumbing business that went corporate many years ago. My grandmother is the CEO and handles all of the business related aspects while my father does all of the hands on work and interacts with customers. I will be able to complete an internship (if you want to call it that) with my grandmother this summer and learn all about the accounting and business aspects to the company.

Rightfully, the company is mine. If I want to I will be named CEO once I graduate college and I will be able to work for 2-3 years. I do hope to acquire an MBA and eventually branch the business/take over new businesses and maybe even climb another corporate ladder.

History complete. Now how would this look for admission to top MBA programs (Harvard, Stanford, etc...)? I attend a top 30 university and have a ~3.9-3.95 gpa and am an excellent standardized test taker. I do plan on taking the MCAT as well as the GRE when I finish school but as of right now I am undecided of what I would like to do.

Also, would the (any) admissions committee view this as a positive internship? It's not anywhere close to Goldman Sachs or something of that magnitude but it is a corporation and I will get a very meaningful experience there. Would they also look down upon me because my family owns and operates the business? Thanks for any opinions/suggestions.

I think it’s fine. There’s no reason why that should be looked down upon. Work experience comes in many forms, and they want to find people with different experiences.

I think you will be fine. Just remember to take the business courses you will need as your electives. Pay close attention in economics and finance.
