My son has applied to NW and intends on majoring in Industrial Engineering. He has a 1540 composite SAT, 3.765 UW GPA, NM Commended, 60% of his classes are accelerated or higher. His ECs include Eagle Scout, V soccer, NHS Treasurer, JETS, Key Club, Student Senate, and so on. I think his chances are pretty good, but I'm biased. What are your thoughts?

He applied between Christmas and New Years and he still hasn't received any notification on his app status. We have the online submission confirmation that says how to check on the status, but no # to access the site yet. Does it come snail mail?

Any thoughts on the Evanston area, NW housing, etc?

Don't worry about not knowing application status. This time of year, it takes them ages to update the website. Admissions told me last year that they will notify you if something is missing. The application number came on the paper they sent with the paper application in the fall. It is printed on the bottom. If you can't find that, you can email admissions and they can look the number up for you. As for his chances, all I can tell you is that they are as good as anyone else's. That sounds bad, I know, but it's really not. Nearly everyone who applies to NU has those stats, so it is the other things, namely, the essays/short answers, that make a student stand out. If those were solid, then I think he's got a decent shot. The Evanston area is quite nice; it does, however, take a good 40 minutes to get to downtown Chicago on the El. There's no proper grocery store within walking distance of campus, so that can be quite a nuisance, and prices of clothing and such are a good deal higher than in other places around the Chicago area. However, there are many very good restaurants in Evanston and it is a nice place to walk around if you get the urge. On-campus housing is more than adequate, but it really depends what your S wants (north vs. south, res college vs. res hall, small vs. large). Dorm food is far from fantastic, but it is edible and there are many choices for all diets. Hope that helps!

there is a grocery store...whole foods is about 3 blocks from the very south end of campus. took me less than 10 minutes to get there from my dorm (which was at the edge of campus, obviously).

Whole Foods stuffs are generally more healthy; but they are also overpriced and taste kinda bland. Coming from Asia, I am particularly aware of how way overpriced the Asian stuffs there are (exotic (probably made in California instead of Asia if you look at the fine print) + healthy = $$$...lol); you can sometime find the same thing for 1/2 or 1/3 the price in some Chinese grocery stores.

I know there is a Whole Foods, but I ment a regular grocery store. A one-stop-shop where you can get your Count Chocula and Raman Noodles (of course). I buy my milk and produce (the little I buy) from Whole Foods, but it's just not the same as a good old normal super market.

There is an Osco pharmacy in downtown Evanston, that carries some grocery items. Milk, cereal, soda. etc. It's not plush, but has basics. There used to be a White Hen Pantry, near campus. I think it is still there, but could be wrong.

Unfortunate news: Osco closed (for good) last week. Condos will be built where it once stood. There is still a White Hen, on Emerson and Sherman, next to the wonderful place called Philly's Best.
