general question about quarter system; specific question about where Easter falls

I'm looking at the academic calendar for 2012-2013, because I wanted to figure out whether our son's UCLA spring break will coincide with our other child's spring break.

Well, there is nothing called "spring break" in the UCLA calendar. However, winter quarter ends Friday March 22, and spring quarter begins Wednesday March 27. Then right away you've got Chavez day on that Friday, March 29, and Easter falls on the Sunday, March 31. Finally, "instruction begins" Monday April 1.

If the quarter begins March 27 but instruction begins April 1, what does that even mean? If our son came home on the March 22, would he need to return for any reason before "instruction begins" on April 1?

More generally: Each year, is there no official spring break that falls around Easter? Do the kids just get a few days between quarters like that?

Finals Week begins on Monday the 18th. Once a student finishes their finals they can go home, and they return to school when instruction begins on April 1. The official beginning of the quarter is basically just an administrative thing and doesn’t really matter for students. Spring Break is always a week long.

Generally there isn’t any sort of break for Easter - it’s just a coincidence that it matches up with Spring Break next year (Spring Break is always the 13th week of the year). When it doesn’t match up, there’s still class during Holy Week.
