General question: C on transcript, graduate school

Hello all,

Long-time watcher, first-time poster here.

Today I received my last grade from Rutgers New Brunswick: I got a C in a non-major math course (but I am a chemical engineer, so the math builds up). I should say that, even after this C, my cumulative GPA is a 3.75 (and for the term it was a 3.4), but this is only after my first semester as a sophomore.

In any event, I've never gotten a C before in anything in high school or college, so I'm freaking out a little bit, particularly about my chances for getting into a good graduate school (like one in the top ten in chemical engineering, such as MIT). I know there's much more to any application, like letters of recommendation and research (which I should get soon), but, if anyone knows, tell me this: is a C in a non-major course something that would completely disqualify an applicant from attending a top graduate school?

Thanks very much for any responses!

since you are a sophomore, than I think you have time to make your grades even better. I mean I have both a D and a C on my transcripts and I have good grades. The key is to continue to work hard and not stress about this grade.

One C in your non-major course will not kill you.

You take over 120 semester hours for engineering. A C in anything isn’t going to hurt you. I had 2 C’s in my major courses and I still graduated summa cum laude.
