Daughter was accepted as a Mechanical Engineering major at some schools that are not well known as “engineering” schools and not highly ranked at all in engineering. She was also accepted as a “Mechanical Engineering Technology” major a a school that is always ranking as one of the top engineering schools in the country. Looking for advise. Is the MET degree from the top school more valuable then a ME degree from much lower ranked schools?
IMHO, no. A “tech” degree “usually” means that the program is less intensive in terms of math.
Where I teach, the engineering tech program is ONLY for military vets who graduated HS without a pre-college program, and did not take enough math to finish with anything more than two semesters of calculus. They plan to be technicians or junior engineers, but not be ready for an engineer title after graduating with a four-year degree.
But - take it up with the top school’s MechE Tech department - ask them about their success in placing graduates and if they end up on a different path than MechEs.
