I don't have anyone to speak to about the Claremont Consortium so pleaseee help! :)

I just had a few general questions about Claremont and Pitzer in particular if someone could help me out.. A student/parent of a child at the colleges/someone who knows a lot about the consortium giving input would be really really helpful and I'd be eternally grateful :)

1) The general feel of the campus- Since it's a consortium, does it feel awkward or weird if you walk from one college consortium campus to another? Say for example, if I go from Claremont to Pitzer, just in general ranging from a social event to a party, is there any form of non-inclusiveness by Pitzer students towards Claremont students? Is everyone accepting of each other from different colleges? How's the entire campus? Does it feel like one, nice large campus or is the division according to individual colleges prominent?

2) Classes- Can you sign up for any classes offered at any of the other colleges? For example, if I'm at Pitzer and I want to take a class in Pomona, is that readily available/possible for me? And majoring, can I major in something like Government Studies from Claremont even if I'm a student at Pitzer?-- This is my most important question!

3) Overall Atmosphere- Since each individual college is small, how does it feel as an overall atmosphere with all the other students from the other colleges? Do you have the chance to get that feeling of a small liberal arts school, yet a medium-sized college as well? Is everyone accepting of each other? (with respect to individuals in the different colleges)

It would be great if someone could answer these questions for me! Thanks :) I really want to apply to either Claremont or Pitzer ED, I'm thinking of Pre-med or the complete opposite of International Relations! So if you could also advise me on which school is better, that would be great too! Thanks again!!

P.S. How's Pitzer's campus? :P Won't get a chance to visit sadly!

I’m a CMC student, so I can try to answer some of your questions.

1) Not AT ALL. The division is definitely apparent because each campus has its own, very distinct “feel” to it, but everybody walks around on all the campuses all the time! Everyone is friendly with everyone else; it doesn’t feel like one big college, though, because as I say each one is very distinct from the others. There is a bit of a rivalry between CMC and Pomona, but it doesn’t extend beyond sports. Usually. Pitzer and CMC are completely cool.

2) Yes to both. It might take some meetings at the registrar’s office, but you can easily take classes at one of the other colleges and I’m almost certain you can major/minor at them too. (I’m sure it’s on the website somewhere.) You can also eat at all the other dining halls, which is a huge plus!

3) Like I say, you’re definitely in your own little college, and they’re all very different - you can often literally pick out a Harvey Mudd, CMC, Pitzer etc. student. The other four are right there though and there’s a lot of interaction. Everyone that I know has friends at the other colleges.

As for Pitzer’s campus, I’ve been on it less than any of the others, but it has a pretty cool desert kind of theme going on. Lots of graffiti! I’d be wary of applying ED to somewhere with such a distinct personality without visiting, though. Maybe you can get some advice from actual Pitzer students. (Same goes for CMC.) I can imagine very few people who would really fit in at both Pitzer and CMC! Luckily, all the schools seem very good at admitting cohesive student bodies, so I don’t know anyone at the 5Cs who’s unhappy, although I’m sure they exist.
