General Questions regarding Pre-med studies

I just have a few general questions regarding the pre-med program.

First off:
I have already looked at the FAQ's regarding this topic on the Rice page and I've also done quite a bit of general research on the subject by perusing the many threads that have been started on this forum, but I would really like to gather some opinions from current students for myself.

Here are the general questions that I have:

1.) I was accepted ED, but I didn't really indicate anywhere on my application that I am interested in the pre-med program because I was more concerned with deciding what to major in at the time; do you view this as a possible hindrance for me as I attempt to engage in pre-medical studies? I can't remember if there was a place to indicate this interest.

2.) How competitive is the pre-med program at Rice?

3.) I know that the acceptance rate to med school for Rice undergrads is around 90%, but I'm wondering if any of you would be willing to share examples of which med schools students have ended up attending? I would really appreciate it as I do like to hear about everyone's successes and I am of course interested to see if many recently graduated owls have been accepted to the med school that I am interested in attending.

4.) I would like to become a radiologist and I plan on majoring in cognitive science or history; do you think it would be a wise decision for me to major in chemistry instead? I know that med schools claim that they do not favor science majors over other majors...do you believe that their claims are accurate? (I'm trying not to get paranoid, but this is something that I'm fairly concerned about).

Those are my primary concerns for now...however silly some of them may seem, please realize that I am just trying to reassure myself of my academic decisions. Thank you for reading! :)

There is no “pre-med program” as such. Pre-Med is simply a set of classes and requirements that need to be fulfilled. You cannot major in Pre-med

It is as competitive as the classes are. Generally people put in a lot of effort and time to doing well.

Baylor College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), Yale, UVa etc. are some of the ones that I have heard about.

Major in whatever you are interested in. Be sure to do well and you will be fine

Antarius-I’m always grateful to see that you’ve posted a reply…haha

I didn’t know that there wasn’t a program! I know that there is no major, but I’m glad to know that you just have to fulfill the requirements. So is there no formal way of indicating that you are pre-med other than by applying for medical-related internships and applying to med school (I guess this is the confusion I’m experiencing)?

Those are some impressive acceptances! As with thousands of others, I’m sure, I’d love to attend Yale Med school and to hear that a Rice grad has recently been accepted gives me hope! (Though I am not in any way surprised because we are talking about Rice afterall…haha)

Yeah, someone from my year at Wiess ended up at Yale. Another friend got admitted to Mayo, which has one of the top programs in the country. If you work hard and do well, you can and will end up in the school of your choice

Regarding pre-med, it isnt really a program. Read through this, it covers it well in detail

^Yep, I indicated in my original post that I’d read the FAQ’s…

Finally, you will have a lot of time at Rice to discuss your options. We have a lot of premeds and they will be able to provide guidance and advice. There are premed advisers who will be there to help during O-Week who can also add input to the choice of major question. You will be able to meet with the professors and departments as well for advice.

Rice pre-meds end up all over. My roommate from last year is in some sort of small research-based program at Harvard med, and another close friend of mine will be attending WUStL’s med school when he finishes with Teach for America. The only thing that can hold you back is yourself.

i have the same questions! i’m majoring in linguistics and studying pre-med, and i can’t find anyone else who has done the same, so i hope i’m ok…
and i’ve been reading a lot that the most common grades at Rice are Bs and stuff, but i know i’ll need at least a 3.8 or 3.9 to go to a good med school… is that manageable?

@Antarius: What did the student who ended up at yale major in while at Rice? I’m just sort of curious to know if he was a science major…haha :P

@Dorian_Mode: Thank you for your response; it was particularly motivational.

I am very concerned at this moment because the stretch of time from now until O-Week feels quite substantial and it’s hard not to spend the majority of this period of time simply concerning myself with the future. I’m just so incredibly excited! :D

What do you think is the most popular non-science major for pre-med students at Rice?
