I just wanted to know the life at Hofstra Univesity. Is it a party school? How big is the campus? how are the professors and the education? does offer many advantages like interships etc.? are there many activities going on there?
also, is it a good school for a major in computer science and a minor in bio-medical engineering?
Hey thanks for asking! I’m a student at Hofstra so hopefully I can help you out.
Hofstra isn’t typically considered a “party school”. At any school, you’ll be able to find people who enjoy partying and people who don’t, but the overall reputation isn’t a party school. The campus is 240 acres - which is considered medium-sized, but the whole campus is completely walkable, and it doesn’t require a shuttle bus to get from any place on campus to another. The professors are great - 95% of professors hold the highest degree in their field. In my experience, it’s safe to assume that almost all of your professors have a doctorate. The career center at Hofstra makes it easy for you to get an internship, because you’re encouraged from the second you step on campus to get started writing a resume, practicing for interviews, and networking. Also, because NYC is so close, many people will choose to intern in the city throughout the school year.
Activities on campus range from pre-professional, social, charitable, and everything in between. There are over 200 undergraduate clubs/organizations, including Greek Life (social, pre-professional, and service-oriented,) political clubs, video gaming, speech/debate, robotics, etc. Hofstra isn’t a school that specializes in just one area - so many students have diverse interests and activities. That’s why there are so many options for things to participate in!
Hofstra’s School of Engineering includes the majors computer science and bio-medical engineering. Class sizes in the School of Engineering are small which makes it easy to make connections with professors and get opportunities to do research or get internships. Also, because we do not have a graduate engineering school, all of our labs are used exclusively for teaching, and not for graduate research. This allows all undergraduate students many opportunities to work in the lab throughout their time, without having to share the space with researching students. Another important thing to remember is that many schools of engineering have TA’s teaching classes instead of real professors - that’s never the case in any Hofstra class, but especially not in engineering because there are no graduate students.
I hope my comments have helped you out! Good luck in the college search process and I know you’ll find the right school for you!
