how good/prestigious of a school is emory? how does it stand compared to ivy league colleges and other schools? I actually live in Georgia but I have this "I need to get out of here" mentality, so I've never really given emory much thought, which isn't fair. I'd like an outsider's perspective though... what is the school known for and that sorta thing...

I'm from the Midwest and had never heard of Emory before my application process. However, the Midwest is one of Emory's most "targeted" areas as they try to increase national exposure. During the application process, most of the upper level students in my class became aware of Emory. However, not many applied (I think I was the only one out of 550 kids! Also, only 3 people showed up to meet with the Emory admission counselor when he visited our school). This might have been due to several factors: 1. Not many students can apply to top schools 2. Many of the top students either go to Ivy's (or equivalents, such as Stanford and MIT) or take a free ride close to home 3. Emory just doesn't have the name recognition (partly due to the lack of Div I sports) 4. Northern bias (Ex. "The South!?!? I don't know...")

If you asked other students (in Minnesota) about Emory they would say: "What's Emory?" At which point I would tell them. Or, "That's the place with Jimmy Carter and the CDC, right?" Or, "Emory is one of the best universities in the country" (I like that one!). Depending on who you ask, Emory is generally viewed (in Minnesota) as the second best research university in the South, behind Duke (sorry Rice, UVA, and Vanderbilt). I believe that Emory is very strong in many programs, especially pre-med and business.

I feel very lucky to be able to attend such a prestigious university. I believe that Emory is a university with a ton of potential. Furthermore, this potential is being realized (see the businessweek thread!). I think CC is the easiest way to describe Emory's prestigiousness. "CC Top Universities" are the peer institutions of Emory (with the Ivies having an edge). Although a few schools, such as Stanford and MIT, have greater prestige, I believe Emory competes with and surpasses many of the others.

I hope this long post helps. Remember that this is just one Midwesterner's opinion (a member of the Class of 2010 no less!).

thanks!!
