General Questions!!

Hi! I’ve decided to commit to Pitt. However, I have a few questions that I’m hoping current/ possible students will be able to answer.

  1. I plan on majoring in biology in order to study in medical school. I know what the general requirements are for medical school, but in terms of selecting courses for the first year or first semester (in order to ease into college life), what would you recommend? And how many classes per semester? (Also want to volunteer and research).
  2. How do the LLC's work? What dorm does the Health Sciences LLC live in? Any stories about experiences in this LLC?
  3. I heard that one of the general biology classes is a "weed out" class while the honors is a little easier. Any opinions?
  4. How are the professors in terms of availability for help/ general helpfulness in classes?
  5. What is the attendance policy for classes? (In case I'm sick etc).
  6. What was your first year like as a Pitt student? Is it easy to make friends? (I will be hours away from home).
  7. What dorm would you recommend for a freshman girl? In terms of space, which dorm is the best? Please list any pros/cons. Speaking of which, does anyone have any experience living in a triple/ quad?
  8. Are there any professors that I should watch out for when scheduling my classes?
  9. Anything else about Pitt? I'm the first kid in my family going to college and I'm nervous/ excited!

Thank you so much in advance! I apologize for all of the questions but thank you!

Look into TRIO SSS program for first generation students

Weed out courses, at least in bioscience courses, are an urban legend at most schools. If you are weeded out, you likely have deficient studying skills or weren’t likely getting into med school to begin with. If it is the former, that can be overcome with work.

I personally know of no professors that have ever intentionally designed their classes to fail anyone.

@futuredoc9817 Could you answer your own questions for me? xD I haven’t committed yet, but Pitt is a realistic choice, so I’m doing my research!

My older son goes to a different university but you can research professors on RateMyProfessor.com
