i just got accepted to NU as a transfer...and i have a few general questions
-are any cell phone services better than others? I have sprint right now and just want to know if it will work well there...
-what bank branches are on/near campus? which are most commonly used?
-i prob won't bring my car since i live in southern Louisiana...how is public transportation?

thanks!

Cell phone coverage is great with any major network. It's the third-largest metro area in the country, so there's cell towers aplenty. You should be fine with Sprint.

There's a US Bank branch in the student center. Not sure what percentage of students use it, but my guess is that most do.

Public transportation is awesome. There are two El (elevated train) stations, one near North Campus and one near South Campus, as well as one in Evanston itself. Evanston is close enough to walk to from anywhere on campus, although it's closer to the south end. Not many students have cars because parking is very limited, both on and off campus.

Sprint is AMAZING in Evanston. I have Sprint, and when I visited, I had full service practically everywhere, except like, in Norris and in the bowels of Tech (but I don't think anyone gets signal there).

oo another question....what is the best way to travel to and from campus from the airport...which airport is best?
thanks again!

i prefer taxis (about 30 bucks to or from ohare) esp when you can split it with one or more ppl, but if u don't have too many bags then the El is fine, although it does take about an hour and a half.

o'hare, definitely! midway is soo far.

yeah, i heard sprint is the best. i saw people with verizon taking out their screens and hanging out their windows to get service while the sprint people had it instead the dorms.

I use Midway airport cause of Southwest, and take a 2-person car service for $30 each, which is fine. The El is between 1 and 2 hours to Midway.

O'Hare is definitely a lot closer. Fly to O'Hare if you are gonna take taxi from the airport to campus and cost isn't much of an issue. As far as the CTA train (the EL) goes, the travel time is about the same from both airports to campus.

For the first time going to school I'd probably suggest taking a taxi. After a while though, unless cost is no issue or you can split the cost of a taxi with a friend (or several), I'd suggest the Pace bus. You also need to take luggage into account. If you have a lot, the El (or bus) would be a pain.

Anyone know about cingular on campus?

does it work in most dormrooms?

I have cingular and I get service everywhere except tech/norris, like everyone.

ok i know this probably sounds really dumb.....i've never seen snow in my life, what kinds of coats/jackets are needed? my friend said a large wool coat, down jacket, and ski jacket... what would y'all recommend?

:) I second a wool coat and down jacket. And make sure they both go past your butt!

I have a big down jacket and it works wonders. Just go to a ski shop and ask what is the warmest thing they have.
