Are apartment listings as abundant in July or August as in April? Also, how far ahead should I find a place in advance before school begins? I'm aware most landlords dislike offers from someone planning to move in months and months later...

Apartment managers in Westwood are well aware of the student population obviously, so they know a lot of people will be looking for apartments before they leave for the summer. They will have wait lists for next school year since most of their tenants will be UCLA students. Once they get a head count of which current tenants will be staying next year, they will begin to get leases signed for the next school year. As with anything, earlier is always better in terms of selection. If you have roommates already, go with them to apartments now to talk to the manager to get on the wait list and/or look at sample units to see where you like to live.

there are still plenty of sets of apts available during august/september since those are usually when the renting cycles start. Sometimes, better deals are had then since the landlords are desperate to fill their places before the new school year. Be sure to look at the smaller places as well as the big high rises. They definitely won’t be renting something super far out like you mentioned.

I agree with Deuces. I looked for apartments south of Wilshire, by UCLA, in September and October of 2009, and they were kind of desperate to sign leases. Part of this had to do with the economy, though, and I do not expect this to be the case when the economy rebounds. Rents were down significantly south of Wilshire. The 1-bedrooms I looked at were renting for $300 to $400 less than what the previous renter had paid.
