I don't know how far I will get with this task and hopefully I won't be alone in adding to it. Everybody needs to be thinking about the general idea of "residency" from day one of medical school, although conventional wisdom says that whatver you start out believing will be your "choice" will likely change.

Maybe somebody will clean it up at some point.

So starting from the beginning:

You gotta go here.

NRMP: Residency Match

Read everything before moving on. Lots of terms to learn.

And at the end, you hopefully end up here. Under-paid and under-benefited.

.

Candidates must apply to the programs of their choice using the method accepted by the program. Most programs participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A few programs may use their own application.

[NRMP: Residency Match: The Application Process](http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/about_res/application_process.html)

I will surf these over the next weekend and see what else I can add. Wowmoms’s link from that other thread was helpful:

[Advice for Emergency Medicine Applicants | WMed](WMed)

Even if it is not for your desired specialty, it still gives some good info and explanations of the process and timing.

Is there a resource which will show the research options? Whether research is required/optional/allowed?

Actually, there is:

[FREIDA Online](http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/education-careers/graduate-medical-education/freida-online.page)

Frieda Online allows one to search by specialty, location and a host of other factors. When you click on the name of a program, it will take to a page with statistics and information about that program. Click on the “General Informaiton” tab and you will find data–including its type, size, whether it’s accepting application this year, contacts, expect workload of residents, and the availability of a research option.

Thanks, WowMom, I had gone to Freida, but not clicked far enough in detail to determine the research component.
