general rumors about ivy leagues

Hi, i'd like to know about the general knowledge surrounding certain ivy leagues and colleges esp. their pros and cons. I'm not sure how to explain it but i mean the type of beliefs about the colleges that you can't just ask at an info session. For example, everyone knows that there is grade deflation at Princeton (which makes it somewhat harder to apply for graduate schools). Or that there is a lot of drinking at Miami university. So please share with me some of your knowledge esp for the following schools!

Brown
Dartmouth
UPENN
Harvard
Yale
Columbia
Cornell
Stanford
Princeton
Duke Uni.
Johns Hopkins
UCBerkeley
Tufts University
Boston College
Wellesley College
Amherst College
Middlebury College

I’ve heard that John Hopkins’ pre-meds are very cut-throat but that is just a rumor. (I think)

I’ve heard that Stanford students seem laid-back but aren’t really, while Brown students really are (somewhat) laid-back.

yea i heard brown students are all liberal-vegetarian-eating-hemp-wearing hippies. haha, its still one of my top reaches, even though i am a (mild) conservative omnivore.

^That description fits Berkeley lol

Here are some stereotypes I’ve heard/read

Brown - hippies
Dartmouth - heavy drinking
Harvard - stuck up (what do you expect…)
Cornell - suicidal
Stanford - the “duck” analogy (calm on the outside, but really struggling to stay “afloat”)
Princeton - rich WASP’s
JHU - as been said, cutthroat premeds
Cal - pinko hippie activists
Tufts - Tufts syndrome (not really a stereotype but it gives you an idea)

LOL.

okay i agree with some
Brown- hippies as mentioned
Cornell- suicide…(i completely disagree with that)
Princeton- where the rich people go?
JHU- ^ like they said, cutthroat premeds
Columbia- i hear the students are not quite attractive (i disagree, my bio teacher went there and i find him quite attractive)

not on your list but:

GWU: future stuck-up politicians/lawyers of America

^^^^ Nah…not elite enough.

stereotypes:

Brown-hippies (cool ones)
Princeton-stuck up WASPs

even though it isn’t there…
Vanderbilt-hot girls

Just watch this show up in an article somewhere.

Brown…very liberal
Dartmouth…frats and drinking
UPENN…all business
Harvard…elitists and arrogant (that’s from personal experience)
Yale…New Haven…house system like Hogwarts
Columbia…ugd are hugely outnumbered by the grad student
Cornell…snowy, dreadful winters (hence suicide rates)
Stanford… Ca! bohemians
Princeton…WASPy & Asian (didn’t they have a cut-off?)
Duke Uni. …jock school
Johns Hopkins … trying to build up their reputation for other majors
UCBerkeley … smart students, who can’t afford Stanford
Tufts University … what is the “Tufts syndrome”? (like BC?)
Boston College … the safety school for HYPM, reach for the LACs in Penn
Wellesley College …women elitists who couldn’t get into Harvard
Amherst College … hardest LAC to get into (Williams is 2nd)
Middlebury College … ski school

Brown - laidback, drugs
UPENN - wharton or bust!
Harvard - genii, grade inflation
Columbia - old school because of the core
Stanford - smart, (great campus) seemingly laidback
Johns Hopkins - premed is crazy.
UCBerkeley - smart and crazy. lots of californians, represent! haha.
Tufts University - ivy rejects. =[

Brown…chill, more girls than guys, nice campus, good parties
Dartmouth…chill, tightknit, undergrad focus, study abroad, great party scene
UPENN…pre-professional, Long-Island-y, big, urbanish
Harvard…elite out eliting the elite (i.e. not very friendly)
Yale…New Haven…house system like Hogwarts, artsy
Columbia…grad students, impressive campus, quiet campus social scene
Cornell…bigger town, big school, new yorky, frats
Stanford… Chill, beautiful, silicon valley, diverse
Princeton…old school, nice campus, undergrad focus, part scene but elite one, nerds also
Duke Uni. …more northern than southern, fratty, nice weather
Johns Hopkins … cutthroat, competitive, some parties (Hopkins 500) kinds sterile feeling
UCBerkeley … grad schools, big university experience
Tufts University … Very “moderate”, safe, a little nerdy and quiet, great programs
Boston College … a little WASPy, party school
Wellesley College …women elitists
Amherst College … Great small lac with the benefit of the 5 colleges nearby
Middlebury College … ski school

I think UPENN’s a little less cutthroat as you guys make it out to be.

I’m a moderate and couldn’t survive without red meat…hippie is probably going too far, at least these days, but Brown’s certainly incredibly liberal as a whole.

^^^ I was so shocked when I found out the stereotype of Brown, because the two guys I know there are so uptight. They’re not conservative politically, but in terms of personality, they’re just ugh.

Laid back sums up what I know of Brown (too laid back for my tastes, but in general I like Brown. I need a bit more stress to work at optimal levels).

John Hopkins-Competitive, cut throat
Brown-laid back, but very smart(durr haha)
Dartmouth-Enviornmentalists
George Washington-Stuck up, prada bag chicks. The guys are pretty laid back though.
Georgetown-Almost every student wants to be President of the United States haha
Stanford-competetive
Cornell-Hard and challenging classes

I hear that kids who try to hard to package themselves for good schools ultimately fail because they come off as fake.
