General social feeling at Barnard?

Hi everyone. I have begun the college search and have been doing a lot of research. This summer I visited a few campuses and realized that no matter what the books or websites say the feeling you get from a campus visit is like none other. Even when the students have left you can still get a certain feel for the type of people who usually go to the school. (Party school, sports school, etc.) I haven’t visited Barnard but have read that the women who go there tend to be very city-smart, super social, and artsy. I would never describe myself as a super-socialite, but I have plenty of friends. I appriciate the arts and love to go to art museums I’m not planning to major in it or anything. Plus I really don’t know the first thing about NYC! All i want is a great liberal arts education. What I’m asking is could someone who knows the school well give me an idea if I’d fit in, especially in a social regard? Thank you :)

I would not describe my D as anything near a “super-socialite”. Yet she LOVED her time at Barnard. She approached it with glee, absolutely diving into the experience of meeting new people and becoming involved in subjects and activities that interested her, so she did make some great friends through her time there. And she loved the experience of living in NYC for those four years. So, yes I think you could “fit in”, but as you say, you should visit!

I just graduated from Barnard and I wouldn’t describe myself as a super-socialite! Nor am I terribly artsy… (To give you an indication, my first stop whenever I go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the Arms and Armor exhibit.)
I think Barnard is like any school: there are lots of different kinds of women who go there and we all fill different niches. There are a lot of Barnard women who are from the NYC area, but just as many or more who come from across the US - or the world - and have been to the city once or twice or never. Luckily it’s a fun city to explore!!
I think it’s important to join clubs that fit your interests and take classes you like, and through them you’ll meet people who want to do the same things. And that’s true of any school, not just Barnard.

thanks you guys!!! I’m for sure going to visit next summer, so I can get my own feel. But your information made me feel a lot better!
