General Transfer Question

My sister in law, who has twins who are seniors in college, just told me that it is VERY RARE for kids to transfer after their sophmore year. Does this mean if a kid is unhappy they have to start applying to schools in their freshman year or that window is closed? Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

no, of course not. im a soph. and i will be applying as a transfer to a LAC.

Not rare at all. I plan on transferring. Most people wait longer if they had a poorer high school record so they can "prove" themselves with the extra year in college.

Your SIL is quite mistaken. It is quite a bit more common to transfer in as a junior. In fact, the cc/jr. college systems are entirely built around that idea.

If I were forced at gunpoint to give a number of transfer students of sophomores and juniors, I'd want to probably throw a number like 60% of all accepted transfers are juniors, while 40% are sophomores. Having no basis at all in my numbers other than programs are generally based around junior transfers rather than sophomore ones.
