General UMass questions

I recently looked into Umass and had a few questions that I was not able to find the answers to:
For the national merit scholarships, how many are there? Are they full ride or full tuition? Are they competitive?
Can I double major in computer science and computer engineering?
How competitive is the admissions process? I have gotten all As and 1 B so far, scored a 2290 on the SAT first time, am in all the honor societies, am a second degree black belt, play varsity tennis, have a wGPA of 4.97 and an uwGPA of 3.94, am a governor's school finalist (results pending), have 50 hours of community service(this year), have been in band for eight years, speak fluent Spanish due to Spanish immersion, blah blah blah. Just a junior...sooooo yeah.

You’ll certainly get in, including the Commonwealth (Honors) College, assuming you maintain school work. Out of State? You’ll get $10-12K scholarship to bring cost down more or less to that of in State. Don’t know about National Merit if you mean the one with that actual title. You should probably get into any program you apply to such as engineering. I have no inside information, just some experience. Questions about majors should be addressed to the departments.

You are a slam-dunk to get in.

I don’t know how many “limited” is.

As for double-majoring, it can be tough for engineering majors (at any school) because the class schedule is pretty rigid. The CS degree requires 14 computer science classes in addition to the math and science requirements. There is some overlap between the Computer Science and Computer Systems Engineering curricula, so if you came in with a bunch of AP credit you might be able to get it done in 4 years.

How did you do on your PSAT’s? That’s what gets you into the National Merit Scholarship program. You would need to at least be a semi-finalist to go further in the competition. There are so many semi-finalists per state. From this list, a few become finalists, then finally NM award winners. Other schools will sweeten the pot for NM winners as well, as the actual NM scholarship is only $2500. D was a winner, and another school, (not UMass) gave her another 20K.
