Compared to peer schools like Columbia, Northwestern, and Duke, how good is Penn's financial aid? I've heard that Columbia doesn't require any parent contribution for families with incomes under $60,000. How closely does Penn match this? Thanks.

We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of financial aid we received. Even though we were told not to expect much from Penn and in fact we didnt even apply till after he was accepted. They couldnt have been nicer- extending the deadlines for us and offering a great package. So my advice is to apply and see what happens.

Penn’s FA is great, at least in my personal experience. Definitely one of the school’s stronger points.

mine wasn’t great this year but I’m calling next week to appeal and hopefully they’ll be helpful

ticktock: what do you mean this year? I heard that if parental income doesn’t change, fa is fairly constant.

combine- my best financial aid was from stanford but that was only $3500 better than penn’s which was just about equal to princeton’s.

my only concern is that when i try to check my FA documents on penn InTouch it says “under review,” do all 13ers have this???

i can’t log into penn intouch. it better not say that for me. i’ll go crazy.

but yeah fa is good. i can’t imagine them reducing it after they gave their award but idk if mine is under review. still, i don’t think they’d reduce it now. they better not.

parental income changed a lot

i got in and it said the same thing for me and i was ready to lose my mind but i called and they said it’s cuz they’re adding in outside scholarships. so it’s fineeeeee

Yeah… Penn does a great job of providing aid for low income families. The middle class is kind of screwed, though. There used to be a Penn “Guaranteed Loan,” but they did away with that when they eliminated loans from their aid packages. It kinda sucks since that was extremely helpful for my family. But what can ya do?

Yeah I’d say, being middle-upper class who got screwed by the economy this year, the FA sucks. But we appealed and that didn’t help, so we’re just dealing.

I personally have no complaints. They are pretty generous.

What if you make exactly like 110000 a year? your family is on tipping point of not receiving any aid at all. Between the mortgage on house and the damn land tax (7500$ a year!!!) and the fricking salary tax of 28%, with insurance and all that, my family has like no money to pay for college.

The purchasing power disparity of 110k in NYC and in Kansas is just not the same :(.

Will i receive adequate aid?

First get in. Then worry about the aid. You would get aid but not a ton. They’re very reasonable though so it shouldn’t be a problem.
