D received a letter from a DIII school from the coach of one of her sports. We've had no contact with any coaches - we are not even looking at athletic recruitment. The letter urged her to apply to the school, fill out a questionnaire and send in game tapes if possible. She did recently play in a couple of showcase events - so I am assuming they received her information from there. Is this a typical letter that all above-average athletes participating in showcase events get? Don't want her reading too much into this letter (this college was not even on her radar till this letter showed up). Thanks.

Sounds like a form letter, but the coach might have seen her play. If the coach is really interested, D will probably get a phone call.

Still, if D is interested in the college (even a little bit), fill out the prospective athlete questionnaire on the college’s athetics website. And write an email to the coach thanking for the letter and their interest, saying she is interested in the college and playing for the coach and that she submitted the online questionnaire. Give her phone number and say that she can send in tapes if coach wants them. Also, that she is looking forward to speaking with coach more about playing and the school.

(kind of a form letter in return).

Good luck.

It sounds like your daughter doesn’t plan to play college ball. Have that conversation first, before encouraging any coaches to call. The whole college selection thing is different if one plans to be college athlete, rather than simply choosing a school that is a fit in every other way.
