Does anyone have any info on which has better science programs- Geneseo or Binghamton?
Especially in the areas of biophysics, biology, physics, biochemistry? Size of classes? Taught by TA's or Professors? Research opportunities for undergrads? Quality of instruction?
Any other insights when comparing the two?

Just some thoughts about Geneseo…

The focus at Geneseo is on undergraduate education including undergraduate research. Courses are not taught by Graduate students at Geneseo.

Even though Geneseo is considered a LAC the sciences have become very popular and strong academically over the years.

Geneseo has a new $53 million Integrated Science Center

Initial science classes are larger but that is true at any school but they get smaller as you advance in the program.

I do know for its size Geneseo graduates quite a number of physics majors.
Geneseo graduates more physics majors than any other SUNY school that offers the major on an exclusively undergraduate level.

Because of its size I think it is easier to get personal attention at Geneseo. At least I know that was my experience.

The College has some wonderful 3-4 Cooperative programs in Dentistry, PT, Engineering, Nursing, Optometry, Osteopathic Medicine and its BS/MD Program with Upstate Medical University-College of Medicine is a good program as well.

The science program is competitive but very strong.

There are a few current science majors on the geneseo section of CC who are responding to questions regarding the science program. You might want to post your questions there as well.

Good luck!! Both schools are well respected and great options.

After a few months at Geneseo this is what i’ve gathered thus far.
Most of the science professors I have had have been very approachable and friendly. I even get to play guitar/jam with one of my bio professors on occasion.

“Most” of the professors from my experience have come off as very friendly and helpful. They’ll work you hard but they truly want to see you learn/succeed if you put the time in. My chem I professor would even offer to hold office hours in the freshman residence hall on south side (saved some of us a long walk across campus).

Hopefully as the months go by, i’ll see more of this attention and great focus on teaching but so far it’s been great.

-two cents.

What about the programs with business and liberal arts?

Probably the strongest and most popular majors besides the Sciences include- Social Work, Psych, Education, Speech Pathology, Poli Sci (Pre-law, International Relations), English and Philosophy.

Forgot to add Business. Enrollment is at historic high levels.

[Business enrollment up - News](http://media.www.thelamron.com/media/storage/paper1150/news/2010/02/11/News/Business.Enrollment.Up-3870307.shtml)

Make sure to visit.

My son LOVED Binghamton… (Accepted but decided not to go there as his major is not great there). He HATED Geneseo (got in too.) My husband loved everything about Geneseo and said if he were looking for a school it would be a perfect fit for him.

Both are great schools so be sure to visit and see what you like as this is an important part of the decision making.

Thank you . These posts were helpful. I’ve applied RD and am still waiting. Geneseo said first week of March I should hear. I guess I have to wait longer for BInghamton.

snowy, please make sure you visit both schools before you make your decision. Do not commit to either of them until you have visited both campuses and experienced the surrounding area.
These two campuses are very different from one another so you really need to visit.

Academically, they’re both very good. What you need to figure out now is which campus environment is the best fit for you.

I got into Geneseo and University of Rochester. I’d love to hear more from students who are going there or went there or parents of these students. What are/were the postives? negatives? I want to major in Biology or Physics or bioegineering, but I also want to continue my studies in music and I love to write and just want to explore lots of other areas -perhaps philosophy.

Congrats on your acceptance!
