Hi! I'm an int'l student and I would like to pursue the courses of a Private American University/college which offers me the possibility to major in Genetics. Do you happen to know what other uni/colleges offer this type of major, besides the well-known Dartmouth Cornell Purdue? it is so hard for me in this case to apply somewhere because not many institutions offer this major...even a concentration within a biology major would be useful. Thank you very much!:D

Bard College has tons of classes focused on genetics. It's a big part of their biology program.

It depends on what type of genetics study you are interested in. There is a very good program in Plant Genetics and Animal Genetics at the Univ. of Calif. at Davis, while I've heard that the program for Human Genetics at Berkeley is good.

I think Duke has a concentration within Biology for genetics.

well i hate everything that has to do with plants, so animal genetics or, even better, human genetics...tnx:D!

U Washington, U Wisconsin. Often the best science programs are not at privates outside a top few.

pisconet -- why private schools? (Also, Purdue is not private, it is the public university of the state of Indiana.)

Well ,partly because i can't afford attending an American college if i do not receive (almost) complete financial aid. And all the people with whom I have talked to advised me to apply for a private college so I'd have greater chances to be offered a bigger financial aid. Yes, now I see Purdue is a public state college.

You could look at Ohio Wesleyan University... I believe it has a rather sizable biology department, and that it offers a genetics major. I would also recommend you look for schools with strong biology departments, and then see what sorts of courses are offered within the department. I could be wrong, but I don't believe that many private colleges and universities in the US offer a major in genetics at the undergraduate level. Most students interested in genetics major in biology as an undergrad and then go to graduate school to specialize.

The good science schools do. Here's what you will find at a major genetics program.

Check out this list of schools that offer aid. Keep in mind, many of these schools are VERY competitive and will only give financial aid to the very top international students.
