Geographic Diversity...is it really a hook

Hey guys,

Quick Question. I am a white, middle class male whose parents went to state schools. Thus, I have no "official" hooks when applying to some top schools (HYP-type schools). However, I do come from a less "active" state, Nebraska. My stats and stuff are competitive for these top schools (I hope), so if all my other kind lands me on the fence when I apply, could my state of residency play a notable role in admissions?

Thanks!

This is a FAQ asked every year. Use the Search function for “underrepresented state” or other key words and you’ll get lots of hits.

It’s a tip, not a hook. It’ll help but it won’t allow for lower scores and grades like hooks will.

And keep in mind that hooks don’t necessarily do much for lower scores and grades anyway… so it’ll be tough. Tips are best combined with other tips and hooks. They don’t stand well on their own.
