Is it considered in the admissions process?

From what I understand, if you live in a state that is considered under-represented at a given school, yes.

would Alabama be underrepresented for schools like Andover, Exeter, and Hotchkiss?

@scales1994,
I think so. I understand that in general Massachusetts, California, New York, Connecticut are the best represented at many boarding schools. However I am not sure about this. Something which surprised me about Exeter is that apparently they have very few applicants from Massachusetts. My interviewer told me that most people who apply to boarding schools from Massachusetts don’t apply to Exeter. I guess that’s a plus for me!

They may have few applicants from Massachusetts, but 10%+ of the school is from there. Geographic location may help if your from Hawaii, because Exeter doesn’t have anyone from there and 2 other states. Also, there are 2 people from Alabama and they are related. Surprising fact: a large number of people are from Wisconsin and Arizona.

Any applicants from Wyoming, step right up.

if your from north or south dakota, kansas, montana, arkansas, idaho, washington state (just to name a few)consider your geographic location a hook.

I don’t believe that there are any students from Alabama currently attending Hotchkiss.

Bump for fun, yea Hotchkiss doesnt have any Alabama kids, and the two kids from Alabama at Exeter are from the Huntsville area like me :D

washington state is a hook? really? i thought it was like, arkansas and vermont and wyoming

maybe i can move there for a while. just for the time being ;)

ps,
do you think that being from the north, like nunavut or the yukon would help? or would being international just cross out any benefits anyway?

pretty much if your from Nunavut or the Yukon or NWT and you have decent stats your going to have a good chance of getting in.

International really depends on the country. Being from, say, South Korea isn’t a bonus, but being from somewhere not represented [like Norway or Senegal] could be. I’d say being from a weird province/territory in Canada [Nunavut or Saskatchewan] is about the same edge as you’d have coming from an underrepresented sate [like Alaska or Utah or Mississippi]- an edge, but not a game changer

Where can I find out if my state is underrepresented at a particular school?

The school should be able to tell you the # of students from your state. When I visited SPS with my daughter in the fall, I was given some sort of “roster” to page through. We live in California - there were only 8-10 students from California at SPS.
