Geography/Geology

How related are these two undergrad programs (in general)? Seems like physical geography can be very similar to some geology courses. Could undergrad degree in geography pave the way for grad studies in geology or geological engineering? How much overlap is there?

I just finished my freshman year, undecided on a major but I think that some geography courses sound awesome and I'm taking 2 next semester. Haven't taken geology courses before. Would love to take some soon, but I don't think I can get into one next semester, all my classes are chosen.

Seems like geology would be the "hot" pick with all the oil and gas stuff going on. GIS is also big though. Any opinions on that?

Not very. At most schools, they are taught in separate departments.

True, a subject like geomorphology could be offered in either a geography or a geology dept. However, geomorphology is typically not a core part of a traditional geology curriculum, although it's a common elective.

A BS in geography might be OK for graduate study in some related branches of geology, such as geomorphology. It would probably not be a good preparation for most branches of geology, or for geological engineering.

Petroleum geology and petroleum engineering are traditional "boom and bust" fields. Right now, it's boom. This may or may not last.

Right now, GIS skills are very employable in a wide range of industries.
