Hi,

I'm new to this whole forum thing, so excuse me if making a new thread and all of that is not proper etiquette for this subject!

I am a second semester freshman at the University of Georgia. I was originally an International Affairs and Anthropology double-major, but I have decided against I.A. because I am truly turned off by the subject. All of the complexities and details bore me; however, there are topics within the major that interest me greatly.

As I searched for a replacement major (as I doubt majoring in Anthropology alone is not the safest bet for my financial future), I came across the Geography major. I am mostly interested in the human geography (A.B.) side of things.

There are several areas of emphasis to choose from within the major: Agro-Food Systems and Food Security; Globalization, Politics, and Economy; Urban and Community Studies.

There are also several physical geography and GIS areas of emphasis, but unfortunately I am not enough of a scientist to desire or succeed in these!

I am wondering what area of emphasis would be good for someone who is very into culture studies and such, but would also like to graduate with some applicable skills. I am interested in non-profit works, and am especially interested by opportunities such as the Peace Corps (my sister is a current PCV and she has not regretted it for a second, and I would like to have a similar experience), so a major that would look good to an organization such as the PC would be great. I have no idea what other occupations I would be interested in, but obviously I will need to make some money one day and can't just do Peace Corps work if I am looking to support myself and family one day. Would the Globalization, Politics, and Economy area be good for a potential career in being an employed demographer or someone that could eventually be interested in a marketing career?

I am most likely going to attend grad school at some point after receiving a degree, so if the major could lead to good careers after a graduate education, I am all ears.

I know that was all over the place and I apologize, but if anybody was able to sift through the post and could try to explain to me what the realistic expectations should be for somebody majoring in Geography, it would be much appreciated!

tl;dr:
1) I don't want an area of emphasis too similar to Anthropology.
2) What would be best for someone interested in Peace Corps or organizations with similar goals?
3) What would be the best area to pursue for a career that makes at least decent money? (Or sets me up for a graduate program that could lead to a good career?)

Thank you!
