Can anyone recommend the top/best schools (public and private) for majoring in Geography? Thanks.

Where do you reside? If you're a New Yorker, take a look at SUNY Plattsburgh.

GW has a great geography department. All the best professors I've had are geography professors.

Clark U in Worcester, Mass.

Yes, Clark University in Mass. Top PhD program in the country for Geography. With fifth year free program, you can get a BA/MA in Geography and GIS.

I'm also looking to major in geography. Dartmouth and Chicago are two of the few elite privates that have the major. Syracuse, Clark, SUNY Geneseo, Penn State have well-regarded geography programs.

Check out University of Chicago as a reach. I think they have an amazing dept.

If you are interested in the mapping part of geography, UW-Madison has a particularly fine cartography program in the geography department. The program is strong overall.

GIS systems seem to be the wave of the future in almost every other discipline. EVERYTHING is going GIS (On-Star, GoogleEarth, sites for county assessors, and on and on and on and on.....). Even the utilities companies are managing their systems via GIS's. Would a geology degree be best for a future in GIS ("Geographical Information Systems")?

So which universities provide the best GIS background...?

Collegehelp--Michigan closed the geography dept years ago. Many others have scaled it back in the tough times.

digmedia, you probably know as much as I do about it, but I think a geology background would be a solid background for that sort of work. Duke's geology department offers several courses on GIS and remote sensing. Job outlooks for geology are very good, mostly because so few people are majoring in the subject relative to the number of jobs open.

oops - I meant to say a "geography degree." I guess the geology slip came out because I just gave a talk at the University of South Florida last week and the speaker right after me was a geologist who specialized in GIS development.

At GW, we have a GIS minor offered in addition to the Geography major. My Intro to GIS prof worked at the Census and there are many geography majors who have interned or work full-time post-graduation at the Census.

i'm a big geography and history lover myself, but can u really get a lot of good high paying jobs in that field? Cause honestly, besides for being a teacher, there's not that much in the field of geography that pays high level income.

Just saying, cause that's primarily the reason why I no longer think of geography as a good major to have.
