Geography or International Relations?

Hi all,

I am in a bit of a situation here. I'm going to enter my third year of college and still with no major decided. I have basically narrowed it down to either Geography or International Relations. Both majors do interest me but I'm wondering if they have an quality job prospects at all after graduation. I know the economy is tough for everyone now but I don't want to go through the rest of my undergraduate career and find out that all that time was to waste. Any opinions on this?

Whether Geog or IR will depend on want you want to do with your life! Geog major is very restrictive compared to an undergrad degree in IR. However, the latter is very broad by nature and most of the time will require an advanced degree in IR for a decent job.

You really need to go to your college career counseling center. They usually provide 1 on 1 advising as well as a host on online software tools to help you in your career choice. They can help you define what kind of jobs/careers are an option in each of your major choices. Although I know some are better than others.

It’s time to be independent and seek help from your advisor, career center, professors, friends and family. No one is going to tell you what to do anymore.

Consider a LinkedIn account and search job options in both fields.

I’m sure by now you are well-schooled in internet searches - just apply it to jobs in each field to get an idea.

Hopefully, in 2 years when you graduate the economy will be improving. Also, if your grades are good (i.e. GPA>3.0) you can consider Grad School.

Of the two, Geography is severely limiting. It pertains more to physical distinguishes, cultures, politics, and environment within.

IR relates more to global economies and politics- something that will land you jobs in governments and businesses as foreign analysts.

Both aren’t exactly the mist promising career fields, so if you can, consider a minor if possible. In any case, IR would still present more doors.
