Geology 50L

I’m an entering freshman for Fall ’11. I register at orientation next week. Over my first year, I want to take a few courses to help me decide between engineering, geology, biology, and plant sciences for my major. I know I’ll have to keep up with Math and Chem for any of the majors, and I’m not worried about general ed for now because I already have some units of general ed.

I’m thinking of this schedule for Fall ’11, for 14 units:

Math 21A
Chem 2A
Geology 50
Geology 50L

This schedule clears me to take Math 21B, Chem 2B, and Bio 2A in the winter quarter, followed by a plant sciences course in the Spring, at which time I hope to be able to choose a major.

MY SPECIFIC QUESTION concerns Geology 50L. I know from the syllabus that it has TWO 3-hour labs per week, 2 quizzes, a final project, and a full-day field trip. Could someone who has taken GEL 50L quantify how much work, OUTSIDE of class, is required? How much lab-prep, lab reports, study for quizzes, etc. More like 2 hours per week, 5 or 10 hours per week???

Also, what do any any of you think of this schedule and plan in general? Thanks.

I tried to get into any type of geology and it was full. your schedule seems like a major studying/ time consuming. you don’t have to take both math and chem at the same time. my advisers suggested incoming freshmens shouldn’t for their fall quarter cause we need to “adjust” so yeah. I’m taking math in winter so I don’t take too many severe courses at once. So talk with your adviser!

So for how many hours you’ll be spending on studying outside of the course the dean, teachers, peer advisers told students to think of it as like follows: If the course is a 4 unit course like Geology you’ll be spending 4-6 hours (you just add 2 more hours to how many units the class is). so Math is 4, thus 4-6 hours. if you take all classes with this much you’ll be spending quite a few hours and no social time. :o but you’re doing engineering so you’re probably mad smart so no worries there. Don’t over do it on fall quarter the advisers also talked about these ‘freshmen seminar’ classes which are 1 to 2 units pass or fail and they just really emphasized not to go crazy on your schedule.

Remember you have 3 quarters so that’s a lot of classes you can take for 1 year. Lot of kids are taking fun classes to get involved and such. And as always go on ratemyprofessor and check out reviews on the teacher!

you can change your schedule after you figure out your class later that night. We were allowed to change our classes from 8pm -12pm after orientation was over. & you can always get more classes say get 5 classes and drop 1 course after you check it out.
