George Bush does NOT care about Black people (please read)

How do my extra curricular activities look?

Debate Team (top 10 in the nation) - Varsity
Mock Trial - Attorney - Outstanding Attorney Award
Academic Decathlon - Honors
NAACP - Secretary
Student Council
Track - JV

How would those EC's look with a 3.0 (weighted) GPA, and a 33 ACT score? I'll be applying to New York University, Hampton University and Howard University. I want to go to NYU the most.

AP scores are:

AP Psych - 5
AP Am. Hist. - 5
AP Econ. - 4
AP Govt. - 4
AP English Lit. - 4

Recs from:

President of Iowa State Bar Association
A Judge
AP Psych teacher

How would my application look, and what do you think my chances of being accepted into NYU are?

Thanks!

Is your GPA really 3.0 WEIGHTED or UNWEIGHTED? If weighted, it's not looking too good...

Freshman year: 1.0
Sophomore year: 2.2456
Junior Year: 4.28
Senior year: 4.61

Unweighted: Like 2.7 (not sure)
Weighted: 3.0

So I think I have a good upward trend?

What do you think my chances are?

Be completely honest.

Is there a good reason your GPA was so low freshman year?

My dad died a few days before school started, I was depressed.

What do you think my chances are?

I am in a similar situation, SomeGirl. :) I am glad you were able to overcome it.

Frankly, I don't know. I think if you are able to explain your extenuating circumstances in a positive light (which is a very hard thing to do - I am struggling with it in my own essay), you have as good of a shot as anyone.

Thanks, Georgeanne! And good luck =)

Anyone else?

BUMP!

Come on people :[

If $ is a concern, be aware that NYU is an extremely expensive college that's not known for providing good financial aid.

Given your interests, I also suggest that you find some other schools to apply to that are between NYU and Howard/Hampton in competitiveness.

Given your upward trend, scores, and your reason for low freshmen year gpa (the fact that your dad died just before freshman year), I anticipate that chances are good of getting into Howard and Hampton. NYU is a possibility, but what I think you should be most concerned about is financial aid.

Keep in mind that your senior year is what you're predicting, and when colleges make their decisions, they'll see only your first semester grades.

In thinking about colleges that may fit what you want (which appears to be going to college in an urban area), also consider Washington U as a reach school. It has some nice merit aid, too, as well as good need-based aid.

If you decided to apply to college while doing a strong gap year, you might have a shot at places like Harvard and Princeton, which have excellent departments in African American history. A strong gap year could be being a fulltime volunteer in a museum (since you're so interested in history) or doing something like Americorps particularly if you connect your history interest with your Americorps projects.

Your Yahoo questions participation, which you describe on another thread, highlights your intellectual curiosity, which is something that top colleges seek in their students, but is fairly difficult to find as many students do activities only to impress colleges, not out of real interest.

One tip about CC: Usually it's better to have an interesting subject header that relates to your post. Using a catchy header that has nothing to do with your post can turn off people and can cause your post to be skipped by people who could have much valuable info for you, but aren't interested in your post's title.

^haha...I only clicked on this thread because of the title.

If you get into Howard/Hampton, financial aid will be the least of your worries (i think) Your ACT score will qualify you for a scholarship from those schools. but for NYU.....you need to be really lucky. I agree with Northstarmom, you should consider taking a gap year, so that colleges can consider your senior yr grades.
