Don't think I wouldn't support the execution of terrorists. I'd love to see UBL put on trial and executed. Laws exist for a reason.

i don't see what was "stupid" about my post - i was just trying to highlight the unwarranted paranoia that exists in america regarding terrorism (seriously, how many times, in your entire history, have you been victim of a terror attack from without? it's not...once is it?)

also, my only other point is showing the hypocrisy in preaching freedom and liberty for yourselves - putting yourself on a moral pedestal - and then saying its ok to disregard these same principles you are so proud of to "defend" them (who exactly is threatening to take them away, by the way?).

A captured terrorist has information about a massive attack that is set to take place within hours. He acknowledges that he knows everything about it -- where, when, how, who -- but refuses to tell his interrogators anything. All psychological tactics to pull information out of him has failed. What do you, as an interrogator, do?

you obviously torture him until he coughs up false information and your country gets ****ed anyway

Torture can break down a person, but more likely it will make the tortured ****ed off and will throw fake info at the interrogators.

i presume you are a catholic, fides et ratio, from your username?

You would be correct. Now run along and dig up what the Church teaches about torture.

lmao sounds like someone is open to discussion

well i was just gonna say that jesus would not approve of your hate-mongering and support of inhumanity to others

Again with the flippant and empty rhetoric. How the hell am I "hate-mongering"?

Do you think that the terrorist networks, primarily the leaders like bin Laden don't know that we are willing to restort to torture? Do you think they tell people who just signed up off the streets all their critical information about who's in what cell, who's the leader, etc.? No. They know very little information, if any at all, and as McCain has said (being a victim of torture himself and strongly against any torture) they will make up lies - and thus make the US military run around in empty circles) in order to get out this torture. The al-Qaeda leaders, even at the lowest, local levels, have begun wearing masks and such - seriously, how stupid can you guys get? Would you spill all your important secrets, like the location of your arsenal, to a random recruit off the street? No. And these are the types of people we catch. Again, empty assumptions. This thread is primarily sad not only because it is being populated by ignorant voiceboxes that only spew out totalitarian-esque rhetoric but also because its by people who only make assumptions, from their incredibly limited point of view (have you fought in a war? have you participated in torture? how do you know its effective? etc.). Like many generals have said, and even McCain - a 2008 presidential candidate (most likely) and a staunch Republican has said - torture is NOT effective.

Futhermore, it is not humane. Again with the ends-justify-the-means rhetoric that can justify anything - even something like the Holocaust. "We won't win wars if we don't torture" - we tortured A LOT in Vietnam...did we win that war? "The world won't progress to a higher level if humanity if we don't kill all the Jews, gays, gypsys, etc." Your rhetoric is disgusting.

you be hating on our arab brothas by suggesting they be tortured and beaten
jesus would hug them like a tree

It has nothing to do with hate.

iloveagoodbrew - you are the type of person that turns a normal Middle Eastern man/woman into a "vicious subhuman intolerant zealot." Why? Because to them (and increasingly to me) you are a "vicious subhuman intolerant zealot." The subhuman does you in for me - I think, along with the Founding Fathers, that all people retain human rights and that label on any general group of people (like Arabs) is disgusting and reminiscent of the Nazi campaign against Jews. And in addition to being hypocritical on so many other levels...and you are not also preaching sermons from an ivory tower? Whatever. Congratulations, you win the Hitler Youth award!

"All of the hoopla over Abu Gharib and Gitmo is ridiculous. We are at war; things like this are going to happen."

To quote the Kite Runner - "War doesn't negate decency. It demands it, even more than in times of peace." Funny, the guy who claims that "There is no shame in war" (to which the main character's father responds with the quote above) is a maruading Russian soldier who demands a married woman to rape in order to allow them to cross the border...and is actually even reprimanded by his commanding officer. Note that this is Afghanistan under Soviet rule, as well.

"If you take up arms against the United States, you bloody well get what is coming to you."

"And compared to what happened to prisoners of war during WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, the events at Abu Gharib and Gitmo are nothing." And that excuses it how? If I killed five people yesterday and kill three today, does that mean I should get off scot-free for the murders yesterday because "compared to what happened" today, the grotesque murder of three people yesterday "is nothing"?

Besides, American and allied soldiers who are captured by the radical Islamists we are fighting all face far worse fates. They're even cutting the heads off of unarmed, noncombatant civilians. Where is the outrage over all of that?"

And we're shotting unarmed, noncombatant civilians to death at like Haditha. Funny how you fail to mention that. And the only reason why they're doing this? Because we're in their country, imposing our culture, our values, our ideals, and killing - yes, their women and children who have nothing to do with the battle. Sound familiar?

then why bother suggesting methods of war that are not only illegal but ineffective?
you know what's the most effective way to make sure you don't get suicide bombed? not be hated
you are not contributing to that effort
and man, stop posing as an american, you're not one so go make an "i'm canadian and i like to torture terrorists thread," cuz you sure ain't helping america be loved with the stupid **** you spew

I was just about to say, Jesus definitely wouldn't have tortured anyone. :(

LOL. Fides et Ratio, is "How the hell am I "hate-mongering"" a rhetorical question?

"Liberals really need to get their heads out of their asses and stop assuming that everyone who breaks from their litany is a neo con who is being funded by Exxon."

Right, and as evidenced by your stupid remarks, NEO-CONS "need to stop assuming that everyone who breaks from their litany is a" liberal who is a tree-hugger and wants to make peace with Osama. Wait, peace? Now that's a new notion - ever heard of that before?

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing. Empty rhetoric? I think we are the only people here - firewalker and I specifically - who have produced any valid evidence (in the forms of links that I doubt any of you clicked because you obviously don't care about educating yourself further and are content to wallow in a pigsty of ignorance while claiming your superiority) and analysis. Show me a shred of evidence, a tatter of analysis that will make any of your arguments make sense and not laughable.

And "iloveagoodbrew"? You need to sober yourself up - I know, it may be hard - because as of now, you guys - as people who don't even believe in the basic human rights enshrined in the Constitution and hypocrites of the highest order a la the Pharisees - are the "true" embarassment to humanity.

Right...so calling someone a "vicious subhuman zealot" isn't hate? pray tell, because if that's love, I want nothing of it.

Quote:
just because you regard your pseudo-democracy to be amazing, it doesn't mean people from completely different cultural backgrounds will think the same.

Not that I need to point out your ignorance, but we happen to live in a FEDERAL REPUBLIC, NOT A DEMOCRACY.

And that's your only response to his comment? Just, "We're a federal republic, not a democracy?" Right, you just TOTALLY killed his argument - you didn't even respond directly to it. sarcastic voice So this is how you neo-cons operate isn't it? Confound the public by nitpicking something stupid - and not at all relevant as we still constantly chatter on about democracy and freedom and Bush's main selling point for the one thing he's ever done in his presidency is bringing democracy to just one nation - and claim yourself the winner. Right. No wonder the fact that as your level of education increases, your tendency to be a liberal also increases.

"xedx, your post has so many stupid comments i dont even know where to start. your post is absolutely hillarious. i love reading idealists rosey outlook on life and foreign affairs. it just shows your ignorance on the realities of the world and life. there is nothing wrong with working for a better world. however, only those who are ignorant would see reality through the narrow optomistic scope of idealism. you truly must be a moron."

Again. Opinions, attacks, smarmy insults and random thoughts...I can't even tell what xedx wrote in his post because there is no rebuttal to his comments at all. Just, "No, you're wrong and stupid!" Truly, you didn't "even know where to start" - because you didn't even start [the real argumentation, if you didn't know what I was talking about, as you have probably never really participated in it in your life..]

^ Good post. We are all very impressed that you can use sarcasm so effectively. Now pat yourself on the back and go back to your ivory tower.

Edit: Yea, we are also impressed at your wit.
