George Mason chances

I posted this back in summer & here goes again.

My daughter
1050 SAT (CR / M)
3.30 GPA
40/140 class rank
3 AP courses
both French & Spanish (5 total) classes
a ton of EC with leadership (class officer, yearbook editor, church diocese service award, school newspaper column, lead in theatre productions, etc.)
we've hosted an AFS student & my daughter has spent 1 summer in Spain / France

She wants to major in International Relations...we are from the Finger Lakes region of NY state...what do you think her chances of getting into George Mason? I know she can't get into James Madison. Goucher is a long shot. What about her chances with Randolph-Macon & Manhattan? Thanks in advance.

Why can't she get into Goucher? My friends daughter got in with a 2.7, 970 SAT's, no AP's, and none of the leadership your daugher has exhibited. She is a great kid, but I'm sure your daughter is as well. Don't assume anything in college admissions! (p.s. I am positive she had the above and was admitted).

You really should include her reasonable reach schools b/c nobody knows what will happen. She definitely cannot get in if she does not apply. I don't know if Towson has this major, but I think she has a chance there too (it is near Goucher). I think she has a good chance at George Mason.

Csdad I just pm'd you. I hope your d has a good shot in getting in as my d is applying to GMU and has similar stats to your daughter.

Of course she can get into George Mason, and quite possibly JMU as long as she is instate. I predict an easy int to George Mason and either waitlisted or in at JMU as long as she is a Virginia resident.

pedsox, I believe csdad and his D are from NY state.

Csdad, You might look into Hofstra, Univ. of Hartford, and Manhattan College as possibilities. I don't know if they have what she wants to major in though.

Yes, Manhattan is on our list.

Manhattan is a pretty good school. I recently met a parent that I had not seen in a long time. Her S is at Manhattan to major in business. He absolutely loves it!

Well my daughter got her apps out to: George Mason, Randolph-Macon, Towson, & Goucher so far. She got a 23 composite on the ACT & a 93.75 average on her first 10 week quarter grades (which helps her overall GPA only slightly at this point, overall a 3.3)....hope this gets her in...I know Towson's going to be iffy...still to apply to James Madison, Manhattan, and Nazareth.

Hi csdad- our d's are now almost carbon copies of each other. My d's latest ACT went up to 23 (previously a 21) so we are real happy about the jump in scores and her average is also in 3.3 range. I am hopeful about George Mason and now a bit more confident about Towson, but also think it's iffy. I think by getting the applications in early, we did the best we could about Towson and GMU. I think we just have to wait and see. We were at the GMU open house last week. About 4,000 kids registered and they said it was the largest open house ever. The only concern my d had about GMU, was that she feels the campus may empty out over the week-ends. They try to have activities on campus every Friday night- either game night, a band etc. But it does seem you need to get involved with some activity - be it sorority-sports- community service etc. to help you forge relationships with others to keep busy on the week-end. The talk at my d's HS this week (Long Island) is that there was 13 inches of snow in the Buffalo area. This is not helping me get her to go to SUNY. Did your d check out U of Tampa and their International Relations program?? My d did get her acceptance and was awarded a very nice scholarship with her stats. After hearing about the snow upstate, Tampa is looking better to her. We'll be in touch, I'm sure. Good luck with the remaining applications.
