George Mason University

What is college life like at George Mason for anyone who's attended, or who've had friends attend?

I'd like to know too. My son really liked it when he visited last fall, and he was accepted back around Thanks giving. It's one of his top choices but for some reason he is uncomfortable with it just the same, maybe because no one from his school has ever gone there before.

i live right next to GMU. its in the suburbs right next to DC. therefore, there's a lot of job opps.

im not going to GMU, but i have friends who might go

it's getting better every year. It does have a reputation of a commuter school, but the campus population is really big so I'm sure there's tons of people who stay there. People I know there have a good time and enjoy themselves.

... and their basketball team went to the final 4 last year =)

Their campus is really woodsy. The whole campus is so big it's like a city. The Johnson Building(Their Main Building) is awesome. It's like a library and food court combined. It's great. GMU is a good place to go.

Hi, I’m replying to this question even though this an old thread because people may still be reading it and looking for answers. I’m the parent of a current student (2013) who had multiple offers, chose GMU and has been very happy and sucessful there. One thing he liked about it - even though this a big university the campus is very walkable, not as sprawling as some older universities. The engineering /computer science building is new and beautiful and is part of the main campus and not a satellite location like a lot of other universities we looked at. GMU has blossomed and is not a commuter school anymore - thousands of students live on campus and there are free movies and other activities on weekends. Free shuttles to the metro make it easy for students to go downtown and enjoy all DC has to offer. The campus is very safe and well lit at night. I feel that we’ve received very personal attention in spite of the size of the university. Any time one of us has a question, even if we ask someone in a high position, they have always taken the time to help. GMU’s motto “where innovation is tradition” is totally true - they are always implementing new ideas there, like the bike sharing program, webinars for parents, and a special (non-degree) program for developmentally delayed young adults. It is consistantly named the #1 Up & Coming US University by US News & World Report. Also, new data released by the state of Virginia shows that GMU graduates have the highest average starting salaries of any Virginia college graduates (yes, including UVA & Tech- they were #2 and #3).

Book mouse, thanks for sharing. My daughter was wait listed at her first choice schools and is seriously considering GMU. She is concerned about the commuter reputation. I definitely want her to have the complete college experience, including weekend activities at college.

Hi Lpetchen, I tried replying to your individual message but it didn’t seem to go through. So I will repeat some of what I had written here… My son lives on campus even though we live close enough to commute. He always has things to do on weekends with his friends from the dorm, including movies, parties, games, and sports in the Rec Center. They even have an outdoor sand pit for beach volleyball. My son has been involved in lots of sports where one dorm floor plays a mini-tournament with another floor - co-ed. They’ve played soccer, ultimate frisbee, etc. He also got involved in a political campaign first semester and that kept him busy and meeting new people. According to the GMU website, over 75% of freshman live on campus. That’s about 2,000 freshman living on campus - so I think anyone friendly can find someone to hang out with!
