George Mason University's Honors College?

I’m applying to George Mason University soon and couldn’t decide whether I should apply to the honors college as well. Is anybody reading this in their honors college? Could you tell me a little bit about what classes do you take for honors and what you guys do? And whether it’s worth it? Thank you so much!

I’ll just add my 2-cents here. Personally, as someone going into engineering, I have no interest in the honors college. Basically, it just adds some classes that I’d prefer not to take and that will only distract from my intended major. For me, it’s not worth the extra time and effort when I’d like to focus it more on my particular area of study and possibly internships, coops, or a job.

It can definitely be beneficial to many others though who may not be as decided on their path and enjoy a more well rounded education and seek immersion into the community.

Admissions Standards: Honors College applications are reviewed holistically. We take into consideration the following: rigor of your high school coursework, your GPA, class rank, test scores (if submitted), your response to the required supplemental essay, your demonstration of commitment to community service and leadership, and any other information provided in your application.

Applications submitted after the November 1 priority deadline are considered on a space-available basis.

How will I be notified?

Students who apply to the Honors College by the November 1 deadline will be notified along with notification of admission into the university. Students who apply late will be sent decisions on a rolling basis through April 1.

My son is a Jr at Mason in the Honors College. There are four advantages of Honors vs non-Honors at GMU. 1. you get priority registration…like first day…so you always get your classes, 2. small class size. His classes average <20 for the most part. 3. Housing is better in the LLC (unless you are a party guy…the HC LLC is great for those staying focused) and 4. one-one-one resources to help you adapt. All kinds of special programs and support. George Mason is GREAT! Also, it does not “add” classes…it replaces the Mason Core with classes that are more interesting. If you have AP or DE credit, you will likely be able to opt out of some of them.

It doesn’t add classes, it replaces the Mason Core…which are required.

My concern for you is that the priority deadline for applying to the honors college was Nov 1st. Now if you apply it is being offered to you on a space available basis. If this option is available to you I would take it. it is a big deal to get priority registration and be able to register for smaller sized classes. Makes the registration process less of a hassle as you don’t worry so much about getting into the classes that you need to take to graduate on time.
