so my stats are
first generation
african american
3.7 gpa
1800 SAT, 590 math, 600 critical reading, 610 writing
26 ACT
tons of extracurriculars
I'm majoring in biology as a pre med student
and i want to be in state because I don't want to be in debt considering the cost of med school

as a pre med student, which school-VCU, VA tech, or GMU would be the best to attend?

my main concern about VA tech is the diversity and how obsessed everyone is with football (i actually detest football haha)

what do you all think about GMU or VCU? i worry about VCU because most kids that go there have lower stats than mine, and I dont want my good GPA and scores to go to waste..
and lastly for GMU, I heard the social life there sucks and the campus is dead on the weekends. I really like its campus though and the proximity to DC.

Why dont you apply to U of Virginia? It is a great school, in state a huge bargain. You are near the lower
25% range with your SATs, but are an URM and a first generation student, which should help. What is there to lose but some effort filling out the app and $75?? BTW, i went in state to UVA, so am a bit biased. For pre-med, I think it is the best of all schools mentioned. C’ville is only 2 hrs from DC, Va Tech is 5 hrs or more away. What county are you from? There used to be a quota per county, so depending on where you live in VA, the bar to get in can be different. (If this is still true)
Good Luck!

I agree that it wouldn’t hurt to consider UVA depending on how the rest of your profile looks, but obviously not a shoe-in by any means. I’ve also heard very good things about W&M’s Biology dept. (dated info by now though).

I also like VCU as a choice - they have good pre med counseling and being affiliated with MCV might give you some added opportunities to get experience in a healthcare facility. Plus, no football Only thing about VCU is safety concerns, especially at night. That said, Richmond is a nice town if you take advantage of all it has to offer.

You might also consider Mary Washington. I’ve always held a high opinion of it since my D visited there years ago as a prospective student. It’s a solid public LAC with some very good professors.
