George School

Child must choose between George and Solebury by Friday. She is super sweet, nice, friendly, extremely bright but I worry about her socially and dealing with mean kids. I think we are leaning towards George because of the incredible academics and facilities. Can anyone comment about the kids at George? Will she find nice, sweet, girls to befriend that are more into books than appearances?

Did your child do revisits? Would she be a day student? My daughter had a great four years at George School and made friends with terrific kids. We’re not Quakers, but I have become a big fan of the Quaker ethos, which does emphasize kindness. George is about half day students, which I think can be a bit rough for the boarders who see kids going home to their families every night.

D2 is a boarding senior now and has been very happy with GS. Like your D is into books not fashion. There is a real culture of kindness and tolerance, which is why we picked GS. Many kids strive for excellence but without interpersonal competition. Lovely and supportive faculty and staff.
D2 doesn’t feel there is any social gap between boarders and day students. Boarders often are invited to visit day students houses. And I think academics are stronger than at Solebury.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Thank you for your responses! She has done a revisit and she would be entering as a day student. I am familiar with the Quaker philosophy, just wanted to hear that they stay true to it.

I have a son at GS and he is constantly talking about the kindness of the kids. It’s a really welcoming place.

Thanks, VTExpat!

We are local to George and know students, parents, and teachers there. The only negatives I have heard are 1) a lot of pot smoking and 2) the IB courses are more about quantity of information than quality of thought. Neither may be entirely true; that’s just what I’ve heard. Everyone I know speaks very highly of the school and the experience, even my one friend who tends to complain about everything.
