Hello,
Our son has been accepted with a pretty handsome scholarship at the George School. We shortlisted the school considering the Quaker ethos and values and are happy about the extent of support the school is willing to offer.
I do have a question about the academic rigor and college placements at George School. Our son also has an offer from St Andrew’s school in Delaware, which by all accounts, is an exceptional school in terms of academics. However, SAS has not confirmed to us what level of FA would they be able to offer us (we need significant FA to be able to send our son to BS).
Can people who know George school well please comment on how strong the school is academically, if our son would have a solid foundation for college if he was to go there?
Your son would get a solid education at both! You have two wonderful choices! @SevenDad had children attend both George and St Andrew’s. Please do reach out to him for insights on both schools! He is very generous with his knowledge.
Congratulations, @pooriepoorie!
I agree that both are fantastic options, and hope that the aid offer from SAS is comparable when it arrives. I would definitely do the visit back days at both if at all possible.
I would also be happy to connect over PM… While we have been an SAS family for 6 years, we took quite a close look at George and loved it (did visit back with our son), and I know a number of families whose kids have gone there.
Bottom line, rest assured it is a great option!
Thanks @seekers and @CaliMex. Much appreciated!
We currently live in Asia and I am taking care of a sick parent, due to which we many not be able to attend visit back days. I am going to try my best to do so though. I will, in the meanwhile, do whatever research I can do. Thanks much again
George offers the IB program and plenty of rigor. They have had excellent college placement. It is very welcoming and inclusive and is known for a “culture of kindness”. (It takes the “Quaker school” part of its identity very seriously and really lives those values.)
Both are great choices.
I heard George School had excellent college matriculation results last year. You may want to try to find their published report.
^^ and this year’s ED results indicate that this year will be as good or better.
I am a huge fan of GS, but for me, the really wonderful thing about the school is how they allow kids to discern who they are and who they want to be in the world and give them the skills and space to work that out. High school can be a tough time, and it’s such a gift to be in a place that sets you up to be your best self, whoever that may be. (And wherever you go to college.) There are plenty of excellent students there, but they aren’t the only ones who are successful and feeling valued.
Choosing between SAS and George will be tough. They are both excellent and have a strong ethos of kindness and social responsibility.
I like that SAS is 100% boarding. I’ve also heard there is a lot less alcohol and drugs there than elsewhere… hard to know if that’s true, though…
I agree that they are similar. They have about the same #of boarders so the community size in that regard is similar, and imo, I would look more at how large the boarding population is and whether they clear out on weekends than whether there are day students. Personally, I think the downside of a day/boarding split is experienced more by day students because so much of the experience is delivered through residential life. But ymmv.
I don’t know about the drug and alcohol rumors. DS said he didn’t see much of this at George but I don’t know how much he’d have shared if he had. :)) But kids were expelled for infractions so it was there. Always hard to gauge this one…
