I LOVE GW, everything about it is super appealing to me, but I'm unsure about the strength of its engineering program, specifically Biomedical Engineering. Thoughts/opinions/comments?

I am interested in this response too.

I’m a Mechanical Engineering major. I like the fact that Engineering is a small program.

When we went to the Engineering tour last year, I was quite impressed. Did you attend?

The Engineering students had good things to say about the program, and many had worked alot of internships already (which seems really easy to do at GW).
The faculty had exciting things to say about the programs and the research opportunities. Alot of people attended.

So I’m psyched …

I actually didn’t attend the engineering open house, but I did take a specialized tour of the BME department with a recent graduate. I don’t know if the tour guide was just having a bad day or what, but he completely trashed the program! He said that the equipment was completely out-of-date and pretty much told me not to go there, no exaggeration.
This has definitely shaped my opinion of the program, and it’s definitely a turn-off.

Wow, that sounds like a bad experience.

The Engineering Tour I went on was good. They gave us a tour of the facilities, which seemed fine. Students were actually working on projects while we were there.

Our student guides only had good things to say about the program. They were mostly juniors and seniors too, and they all had impressive internships already.

Also, the Dean was saying that they were going to be putting alot of money into the program, so that’s always good.

The Engineering School at GW is very poor. In fact, (not to be too hard, just honest) it is considered a joke by the rest of the student body. The facilities are very outdated and neglected, especially as compared to the new and well-maintained Elliot, Business, and SMPA schools. My roommate is a Civil and Environmental Engineering major, and only chose to attend GW because of the great financial aid she received. Many engineering students receive a great FA package because the school wants to recruit engineers as this is by far its poorest program.
To give you some perspective, this roommate of mine has a sister who is now a senior in high school. Her sister will also be an engineering major and was accepted to GW with financial aid. My roommate is STRONGLY discouraging her to attend as she is extremely disappointed with the quality of the program. If you have the option for a better engineering school, take it!

GW is not a good choice for engineering.
