george washington honor scholarship

Approximately $43,000 - not including travel costs, is what the fin aid office estimates as the total cost of attendance (that is what the maximum scholarship is worth). Realistically, though, you will end up spending less than that. If you buy a bunch of your books used instead of new, get a single instead of a double, or get a meal plan less than 21 meals a week (not a choice as a frosh), you will spend considerably less. Of course, this does not take into account frat/srat dues if you choose to be a part of one.

Don't singles cost more than doubles?

dima, ive heard the opposite regarding room prices--that doubles are cheaper than singles. is this not true? also, when do we apply for housing, or do we even apply at all? whatst he process?

Whoops! My mistake, thank you for pointing that out, of course doubles are cheaper than singles.

You should get housing forms in a couple of weeks. They'll ask you to choose whether you want a single or double (ED applicants get priority but with 60% of the rooms singles, you'll probably get one if you want one) and to fill out some info that will help them choose a roomie for you in case you end up in a double.

Does the full scholarship cover the expenses of living in a fraternity/sorority or does it just apply to the dorms?

Also, do you know if the money can be applied to Study Abroad?

It covers living expenses up to the amount it costs to live in the dorms - no matter where you live. For unversity-approved study abroad, you have to work things out with the people who specialize in study abroad (we have a whole office for that). I know it covers university-sponsored study abroad up to your scholarship amount, which is how much it would cost for you to stay in lex.

Do those of you who received a full ride, or almost, have a significant amount of financial need/ low EFC? I know the scholarship was a merit-based one, but Dima implied that the decision to give more than tuition may have been partly based on financial considerations.

I am guessing that financial need did play a role in that decision, at least in my case. My family really needed all the financial assistance that we could get. But who knows? Maybe they just liked me a lot! JK! :)

dude im new to this thing but i just found this thread and thought id join. i got a full tuition GWHS too and im def comin to W&L, and playing on the lax team. I just had a question about housing. Tell me if im in the wrong thread lol, but is a single or double better for a kid who is really social and likes to go out a lot. thanks

Single or double has really no effect on your social life. If you routinely come back wasted out of your mind at 4:30AM, I'd suggest a single as you don't want to **** off your roommate who's trying to sleep.

HAHAHAHA...yeah, I probably wouldn't like a roommate like that. :-/

Then again, you might just end up with a roomie who will come home wasted out of his mind at 5AM, when you're already passed out. (Neither my roomie nor I do this, though we have had nights when there was no one in our room until 3AM)

I'm a junior and just came back from a visit at w&l. it was great. anyways, i was wondering if some of the people who got the george washington honor scholarships could post their stats? Thanks
