**George Washington RD Acceptances 2010 Official Thread**

Somewhat ironically, for the purposes of this discussion, they’re very clear about this in the information session when you visit.

I believe I may have checked that I visited on my application but I’m not sure. we’ll see how it goes in a week or two

Sikorsky, that is very ironic: you have to visit to hear it, and if you have visited, you probably have at least some interest.

@jstersh, they log every contact and visit.

Great…we live close by and my son has visited friends there and gone for different events, but didn’t interview. I guess he is not getting in despite his great ECs and grades. Any word on when decisions are out?

If he’s visited friends and been to events, he probably was able to relate some specific reasons for choosing GW in his essay. If local kids are truly applying sight-unseen, it could look like they didn’t do their homework in choosing the school. Your son does seem to have done his homework, just a different way.

(BTW, we sent our kid for an unofficial overnight with friends at another school, and when she was chatting with the rabbi at Hillel, he had her fill out a card for admissions to log the visit. That’s how we found out that admissions tracks these things.)

I’m so nervous!

GPA: 4.0
SAT: 2080

I am an engineering student right now. GW is working very hard to boost its reputation very high. Current President Knapp is networking diligently and our provost is a legend from MIT. My class had an average overall acceptance of ~30%. Very very few national high research universities have that admission rate and it doesn’t look it will get any higher. Also the school just hired a Nobel Laureate in Medicine (No school in DC has one on the faculty, not even at gtown) and will shortly begin construction on what will make our school clearly stand out, the GW Science & Engineering Complex (Georgetown does not have an engineering program.) If you don’t get in please realize its not a guarantee.

P.S. I didn’t interview and I’m from the DC suburbs but still got in w/ a scholarship so you never know.

thanks man

@schmohawk: I’ve visited GWU three times and I wrote a very GWU-focused essay. I realize that writing the generic DC one is a death sentence, especially since many students who do so also list that they applied to Georgetown; I didn’t apply to Georgetown.

I’m getting really nervous about this whole “generic DC” essay. my essay did not pertain to the school at all, but my supplemental essay (why you chose GW) did (obviously). I talked a bit about GW specifically, but I also spoke a great deal about the enticement DC has for me.
I didn’t apply to any other schools in DC, though.
should I be worried?
(I visited the school once…I don’t really have any other examples of demonstrated interest)

I don’t think writing about the DC-area is a death sentence, especially if admissions loves to advertise the perks and opportunities available in DC. As long as it doesn’t feel like a tour brochure and you tie in DC with GW, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Oh gosh. My essays definitely the “generic DC” type. :frowning: I wrote about how I visited my cousin (unofficial visit) and how much fun I had on campus and off. I mentioned a tacky story about making a wish at the kogan plaza fountain haha but then I wrote about the study abroad programs. Shoot. Now I’m scared and nervous …
Does anyone know the exact date results are coming out? I’m too lazy to read through the four page conversation lol

villanovax, speculation says that Thursday is doomsday.

Just wondering…how can GWU assess the essay for an OOS student who didn’t have the chance to visit and didn’t know anyone at the school?

My son took a different approach to his essay because we didn’t visit, he didn’t want to regurgitate what was on the website, and he didn’t want to just say “because I’d like to go to school in DC”. My guess is that admissions either liked it or hated it…

This message is not meant to disappoint anyone, but simply to back up Schmohawk’s excellent advice of 3-17-11 based on personal experience.

When my S applied to GW for the class of 2014, we had no idea about CC. Luckily, we knew a friend whose daughter was a senior @GW at the time, so we asked for her advice on how to fill out my S’s GW application. She told us to write something very specific as to why my S wanted to go to GW, so my S checked GW’s website (and visited the campus), read up on his intended department, and took notes. He had so much to write about GW (and the famous landmarks surrounding it; e.g., the White House, the World Bank, the IMF, the Kennedy Center for the Arts, a number of embassies, etc.), his problem then was to fit the essay within the required number of words. He did have the requisite GPA and SATs, but I’m sure his why-GW-essay helped a lot in his getting in.

Good luck to all of you. You’ll love GW!

Thanks for the encouragement! Son wrote about the research opportunities at GW since his friend is very much involved in that. I think the website said decisions available on March 25, let’s see. Good luck!

Wahhhh! I’m so nervous. Three days til the end of life as I know it?!

Do we find out through our portal, email, or mail?

YOu’ll get an email telling you when your decision will be available online. I am still betting on this week.

ALSO! Is GWU arts and sciences known to be “easier” to get into compared to applying to their business and medical school?
