AMAZING AMAZING ESSAYS (to be used as an example for next year by counciler, and she only shared two examples total from the last 10-15 years, so mine is replacing 1 from 5 years ago…to be arrogant…its THAT good :), i think spending time on essays / the qualitative portion is really worth it.
OK extra currics
applied for honors program

Showed no interest in the school besides applying, never seen the campus, no interview, no mailing list, no signing my name at a booth, visiting when they came to see my school…really NO interest, i decided pretty late to apply

GPA: 3.0 UW, 4.1 W
SAT: CR 800, Math 690, Writing 690
Class Rank: Top 10%
National Merit Commended
Lackluster EC’s, Essays

GPA: 3.6/3.7 UW, 4.2+ W

rank: top 20% super competitive school
SAT 2: both below 700’s
6 AP’s total, taken 3 tests so far and got 3’s and 4’s

really good essays, very unique for the common app one
good recs, i’m sure

never visited the school, no interviews…maybe that’s why?

-IB diploma candidate
-funny common app essay (as described by others), good GW essay
-GPA 3.98 (UW)
-ACT 28
-2 APs from 10th grade-5, 4
-really good recs
-fairly good ECs

not gonna lie, i’m a bit bitter, but i’ll get over it, haha.
but congrats to those accepted though, that’s exciting!

also, sorry if this is a silly question, but what is tufts syndrome?

Tufts Syndrome is when a school tends to waitlist their top, overqualified applicants because it assumes that those applicants will get into better schools, and thus, not attend their school. Schools do this in order to have a higher yield. Of course, no school will ever admit to practicing such a thing, but it can be pretty obvious if a school does or not by looking at the stats of those waitlisted in relation to the rest of the applicant pool as well as where those applicants end up getting in.

^^ I cant believe all of these 4.0s getting waitlisted, yet I got A-s and B+s in my all APs and somehow get in. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

D got accepted at Berkeley and waitlisted at GW on the same day. Kinda bizarre. 3.92 UW, 4.4 W. 29 ACT. Tons of ECs, leadership, etc. Took hours of server problems to get through the system for an answer, too. Strange day, but Berkeley definitely made it a good one.

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.2 W
SAT: CR 690, Math 800, Writing 800
Class Rank: Top 3%
Courseload: 2 APs junior year, 5 APs senior year, 4 years each of Latin + Spanish (tons of Honors classes too)
Tons of ECs, great letters of rec.

I dont know why some people on here are complainging they didnt get in, yet they say “i dont care bc i got into _______ university” …well that’s the reason you were rejected…gw is usually good in seeing if applicants are applying to gw as a safety…or bc they really wanna go there…which is why i always stressed that gw looks to see that applicants show that they really wanna attend…aka interviews, visits, emailing your represenative

I was accepted.
3.52 weighted (I think), 2090 SAT, 32 ACT. Good personal statement and recs, Okay ECs. three AP courses this year. (I’ve taken a pretty heavy course load the past two years. Plus, I’ve taken all of the honors courses my school offers.)My supplement wasn’t great. (I don’t think. I wrote it the day the app was due.). I’m pretty sure my recs were good. I didn’t read any of them. National merit commendation.

I visited, talked to a counselor at a college fair, went to the meetings both times a counselor came to my school and interviewed (I feel it went really well). I think that might be why I got in despite my not-so-great stats.

@freckles23 I thought GWU’s yield was 2% above expected last year so that would seem to indicate that they would not have accepted any one off of the w/l. When I read about the increased yield last year, I guessed that they would be more conservative this year and waitlist more and accept fewer applicants so that they would not have to deal with too many students again this year…if so, they will probably accept off of the waitlist…

GPA: 3.9ish UW, 4.1 W
ACT: 35
Class Rank: Top 10% (school doesn’t report any more specifically than that)
Courseload: 7 AP classes, one honors, one regular (hardest courseload possible).
ECs: Multiple clubs, outside volunteer work weekly.
Interest: No visit, no interview. But very good Why GWU? essay.

In reply to Freckles: My daughter did get accepted and did NOT visit. In fact, her SAT scores were sent in late. I think all of this college acceptance stuff is PURE RANDOM and also geographically based. We are from New England. I do not know if that helped. Good luck!
