To those wait listed with high stats …

What is your major? Maybe you were waitlisted because GW had alot of applicants for your major?

I was accepted into School of Engineering for Mechanical Engineering.
SATI: 2110/2400
SATII: Math II 730 Physics 690
GPA 4.85/5.0
EC’s: Sports, Clubs, Community Service.
Rec’s: Good
AP Scholar with Honor
4 AP’s this year, 9 Total, many honors courses

I agree with the post that when you are applying RD, GW is no longer a safety school. Too few spots left after 2 ED’s.

I also applied to UPenn (waiting), Villanova (waitlisted), and Rutgers NB (accepted) so you just don’t know.

"To all these higher applicants getting waitlisted/rejected, did you guys ever visit or do an interview? "

no interview bc i didnt know GW had interviews until like 2 months after the deadline. totally my fault, but they could have made it a bit more obvious that they offered interviews. i visited DC and walked by GW in front of the kennedy center.

2220 SAT,
780 SAT MathII, 770 Chemistry
3.76 GPA unweighted

Wait-listed By GWU - what is going on?
Accepted by Boston College, Boston University, NYU…etc

^^^^^^^^^^ it’s called yield protection, and it’s ****** messed up.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2140 680 CR, 760 M, 700 W
[] SAT II (if submitted): 700 Math II, 730 US History
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Around 3.5
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 5% (34/917)
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 US History
[] Senior Year Course Load: 3 AP’s: AP Calc BC, AP Physics C, AP English Lit
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Newspaper (editor), Hi Q Quizbowl, Mock Trial amongst other things. Nothing really out of the ordinary
[] Job/Work Experience: Employee at the public library
[] Volunteer/Community service: 250+ hours community service (Technical Theatre)
[] Essays: Good, not great. I really did research and included lesser known facts about GW into it
[] Teacher Recommendation: 1 Great, 1 just Ok
[] Counselor Rec: Probably generic, we have over 900 students in our class
[] Additional Rec: One from my boss at the library that was solid
[li] Interview: None, found out too late about the interview process
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
[] School Type: Large, poor public
[] Ethnicity: East Indian (unspecified on Common App, but my essay gave it away)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: < $80,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): None

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My coursework in high school reflected my interest in engineering. I had taken 2 engineering classes, 1 drafting class and was part of a Boeing program. GW is currently trying to build up their SEAS department, so I guess it helped.
[] Weaknesses: GPA was my only real killer, it will probably be my downfall for the Ivies come April 1st
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Solid application throughout, good test scores, choosing an unpopular major at GW helped too![/li][/ul]General Comments: I hope to see everyone at GW if I do end up going (which looks like I will)!!!

although many people wait-listed had more impressive credentials, but I guess GWU is looking for less competitive students to have higher enrollment rate.

It seems like all of the people who were accepted were fairly competitive though. Even if GWU is waitlisting some very well-qualified candidates doesn’t mean that those who were accepted are mediocre. I understand that it’s frustrating, but you’re coming off in a really rude way.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1870 650 CR, 580 M, 640 W
SAT II (if submitted): 590 Lit, 600 US History

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10% (26/268 - just barely made it lmao)
AP (place score in parenthesis): 3 AP Lang and Comp
Senior Year Course Load: 2 AP’s: Calc AB, Psych.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): (Editor) Literary Magazine, (President) French Club, more leadership stuff, etc.
Job/Work Experience: None.
Volunteer/Community service: Leadership position in community youth group… lotsa projects, lotsa service.
Essays: I had to write FOUR supplemental essays for this school. And they were all quite well written.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read either, but I feel like they were just alright.
Counselor Rec: Okay probably.
Additional Rec: Noneee.
Interview: None. Never intended to have one.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Journalism (or communications)
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
School Type: Small, Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $120,000 approx.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Canadian (American Immigrant) with intriguing life story, Journalism essay was totally bangin’ (showcased writing talent).

Reflection

Strengths: Leadership, and the fact that I’m well rounded, but passionate about certain things - this fact shone through in my essays.
Weaknesses: GPA, SAT scores, lack of job experience, rank (lmao)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The strength of my essays, my background, and my eccentricity =]
General Comments: lol, I was worried 'cuz I hadn’t heard zip from GWU in a while… so I come on here to see what’s going on and I notice everyone already has gotten their decisions. I panicked and thought I didn’t receive the email… I obviously did, but probably skipped over it last week because I was so anxious about that NYU email crap going on xD Whew, if it wasn’t for you guys I probably wouldn’t have figured it out (And admittedly, that is very sad xP).
I’m still waiting to hear from other schools, but this is a strong choice for me. If the FA is generous, it’s highly possible I’ll be attending next year.

SAT 2220, 3.75 GPA, summer research, won 1st place in science competition, more than 120 hours volunteer hours, national honor society, two research papers in the process of publication, worked in a research lab in a prestigious medical school, didn’t apply for FA. Applied for GWU’s honors program.

Wait-listed.

Good luck for the people got in with lower STATS. GWU doesn’t take higher performers, it is their lose.

I already said it once, but you are being rude. I know several people who have very similar stats, and many with better states, so get over yourself. Getting wait-listed sucks, but it happens.

does anyone know when financial aid packets are mailed?

I think they come with the official acceptance letter which should arrive sometime this week.

Hey Victoria: Your argument realy doesn’t hold up. They took
Awkturtle:Accepted (Elliot school)
SAT: 2230
GPA: 3.8 weighted, 9 APs by the end of high school: 4s/5s
Good essays, good counselor rec and teacher recs, great extracurriculars, interview went really well

and Mrsudden:
Accepted

SAT: 2200
ACT: 32
GPA: 3.8 UW, 4.2 W
4 APs: 4, 4, 4, 3
Solid ECs
Good Essays

and let’s not forget blueskidoo:2320 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.6 unweighted, national merit finalist, moderate ec’s

So I guess it must have been something in your personal application that caused them to waitlist you.

those are exceptions^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ the majority of overqualified applicants were waitlisted.

I don’t think they’re being rude… if gw does take people with lower stats for the sake of trying to get more people to go to their school, then that’s what they do. GW is a business, so they’re going to want to get as much $$ as they can. It sucks, and it’s not totally fair considering it’s not a safety school for everyone (and I didn’t visit/interview since I didn’t think it was worth it considering a 9 hour drive - waitlisted), but it’s the way it is. Oh well.

Correction: Of the very small handful of people who post on CC, about 10 who figured they would get in for sure did not. An equal number of people with similar stats were accepted. I don’t think you can make any sweeping judgements based on those numbers, do you?

Overqualified? I guess not.

i am making sweeping judgements. at GW, overqualified= waitlist. that’s just how it is accept it.

Seriously. People with similar and better stats than yours were accepted. Not waitlisted. And on this board the numbers for accept/waitist are about equal.
